A teenager has been fatally stabbed after trying to stop a gang stealing a friend's mobile phone in east London.
The 17-year-old, named by his family as Rizwan Darbar, was attacked in West Ham Park, Forest Gate and died at Newham General Hospital shortly before 7pm.
It is believed the victim was in the park with two friends when they were approached by an all-male gang who took a mobile from one of them.
Mr Darbar stepped in and was stabbed, police said.
A post-mortem examination is being arranged and an inquest has been scheduled.
A murder inquiry has been launched but no arrests have yet been made. Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Mr Darbar's brother Tausif, 19, said: "The first I knew about it was when I got a phone call. I came straight to the park and the ambulance was already here. Rizwan was on a stretcher.
"I was asking his friends and the police what had happened. I didn't think it was too major to start with.
"They had given Rizwan morphine. He was in a lot of pain. And then I went with him in the ambulance.
"I spoke to him in the ambulance. He was saying that it was nothing much, that they were having a laugh and then these boys approached them."
Mr Darbar said Rizwan had been fasting because of Ramadan and had gone to the park to get out of the house.
He said: "He was fasting and bored so he went out with some friends. They were walking through the park waiting for some other friends when some black boys came up to them.
"They were asking them for money and phones, anything valuable. His friends eventually gave their phones and jewellery.
"I think Rizwan twitched or moved or something. An argument broke out. Someone standing behind the boy in front of Rizwan put his arm round and stabbed him in the stomach."
Mr Darbar said some of the friends began chasing the boys as they ran away but soon realised that Rizwan had been injured.
Mr Darbar described his brother as a vibrant young man who was dedicated to his family.
He had recently started a job at Currys in nearby Seven Kings and was studying for A-levels in accounts, finance and business studies at Newham Sixth Form College.
