AMMAN (JT) - A baby girl recently found in a trash bin in Jabal Amman is the daughter of an unmarried couple, who are now in custody, charged with committing adultery by the Amman prosecutor general.
According relatives and neighbours, the 23-year-old father had proposed to the 21-year old mother twice but her family refused.
Unable to marry, they began an affair over two years ago that left her pregnant, neighbours and relatives said.
The relatives told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that the man, upon hearing of the pregnancy, called for the young woman to have an abortion, but she refused and stopped seeing him.
She concealed her pregnancy from everyone until she gave birth September 4, Petra added.
The girl's mother said she was unaware that her daughter was pregnant until that day, saying that when she asked her daughter about her weight gain, she was told that it was because of appetiser pills, Petra continued.
The mother said, on the delivery day she and two of her daughters took the pregnant woman to a vacant apartment in their building where they helped her deliver the baby.
According to police investigators, the eldest daughter stayed to clean the apartment floor while the mother and her youngest daughter wrapped the baby in a green towel, placed her in a carton and threw her in a trash bin, ignoring the young mother's request to leave her in a public park.
The baby girl, named Omaimah, survived being crushed by a trash compressor thanks to a street cleaner who heard her screams.
One of the young father's female relatives told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, news agency that she went twice to see the girl's family to propose on his behalf, but they rejected the proposal, claiming she was already engaged.
The young man told police that he received a phone call from the girl's sister telling him that his girlfriend gave birth. When he asked to see the baby, he was told that the infant had died.
Now the two parents are to remain jailed until they are tried for adultery, a charge that carries a minimum sentence of five years, legal experts said.
This can be voided if parties to the case, mainly the woman's family, drop personal rights or reconcile and the couple are married by the administrative governor.
