Bollywood star branded Muslim 'non-believer' after Hindu festival

LUCKNOW, India (AFP) — Bollywood bad boy Salman Khan is in hot water again -- this time with some of the country's Muslim clerics.
Khan, known for playing a tough guy in his films, has been branded a "non-believer" and ordered to reaffirm his faith in Islam after participating in a festival honouring the Hindu elephant god Ganesh in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The order came from scholars at the influential Daarul-Ifta Manzare school in northern Uttar Pradesh state, which claims hundreds of thousands of followers among India's approximately 140 million Muslims.

"Be it a pauper or a king, everyone has to follow the dictates of Islam -- nobody has been given the exemption to bypass the tenants of the religion," religious scholar Nafeez Khan told AFP by telephone.

The 41-year-old actor must reaffirm his faith before an imam and two witnesses, the cleric said, describing the religious decree as "right and appropriate."

Khan was released on bail last month pending his appeal against a conviction for killing protected wildlife. He also faces charges of manslaughter after a road accident in 2002 left one person dead and four injured.

This is one of the problems of Muslims living as a minority in India, some Muslims will do anything to fit in, but still the Hindu Fanatic parties will demand more. So actions like this attempting to integrate and gain acceptance achieve nothing except compromise ones own belief.

The Islamic scholars are correct when they say that everyone must follow the teachings of Islam regardless of social class and its a good thing that they are speaking out about such issues. It is their silence in the past about societal issues which has led to Muslims only practicing Islam inside the masjid and follwoing non-Islam in the rest of their lives.

now your just talking stupid. respecting other faiths doesnt mean that you start practicing it. and as a Muslim you must declare that there is ONLY one god. Once you start praying to idol's, you stop being a Muslim - period. Everything in the fatwa issued is correct. It's one thing to simply observe someone's religious customs, its another thing to start taking part in it. As far as im concerned, Salman Khan is no longer a Muslim and probably never ever was one to begin with. after all, his own sister is married to a Hindu, which is forbidden in Islam.

BOMBAY, 21 September 2007 — Bollywood actor Salman Khan is once again caught in a controversy after a fatwa (religious edict) was issued on Wednesday by Mufti Fakir Qadri Mohammed Farouq Gafartulla of Darool Ifta Manzar E Islam of Bareilly, in Western Indian sate of Uttar Pradesh, which, effective immediately, declares that Salman Khan, his wife, parents, brothers and sister-in-laws are non-Muslims.

This fatwa was issued after Salman Khan and his family members were shown on TV placing the Hindu elephant deity in their house and worshipping it. Later Khan family members were seen leading the immersion procession of the Hindu deity, dancing and singing Hindu hymns.

According to the fatwa, Salman Khan and his family members would have to recite the Shahadah (a declaration stating that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammed (pbuh) is his messenger) and would also have to seek Allah’s forgiveness and promise not to repeat the offense in order to become Muslims again.

Mufti Fakir Qadri further added in the fatwa that if the male members of the Khan family are married, their actions invalidated their marriages and they should re-marry after they repent.

Those mufits are crazy. Salman Khan has not killed anyone. For Muslims we invoke God as "God (Allah" and the Hindus invoke God as "Krishna".

do you even know what a fatwa is to begin with? obviously you dont. you are under the impression that a fatwa is a 'death sentence' because you read that in the western media. a fatwa is a religious edict, much similar to what your pope does, for your philipino catholics get it? you have not seen the video of salman khan worshiping idols. i have, on cnn-india, which is available online IBNLive News | News Homepage. he was clearly clasping his hands together and praying to an idol, once a muslim does this, he ceases to be a muslim. all the fatwa says is that salman khan, and his entire family who have taken part in this hindu idolatry have ceased being muslim and muslim and must take shahadah in front of two witneses in a mosque, once again in order to become muslims again. to put in a way for a phillipino catholic like you can understand, he has been 'ex-communicated'. what's so 'crazy' about that? after all, your religion, the catholics, do it all the time. and no hindus dont call god 'krishna'. do you even know what krishna is? its a mythological idol, in the shape of a blue baby, who is considered playful, so they pray to this idol as a 'god'. big huge difference. if you love this idolotary so much, why dont you become a hindu, afte rall you claim to be indonesian (all lies) well they were once hindus themselves.

Most Indian muslims have at least one hindu in the family, there is a tradition in India of hindus and muslims breeding with each other. So putting a fatwa against Salman khan is a bit hypocritical
