Have you seen the movie Zeitgeist yet? That movie is a bit wack in some places, so please take it with a pinch of salt.
Towards the end of the movie they talk about RFID chips being implanted in humans [its actually already happening today as we speak] whereby your entire identity and credit information, bank accounts, employment verification, and all state-issued licenses, communications IDs ... - everything - would reside on that one single chip.
And so, if you ever "misbehave", they'll simply turn that chip off and you'll find yourself without an identity. Kinda like what happened to Sandra Bullock in the move The Net.
Its an example of what can happen if the State manipulates things so far that it gets to that situation where they have the power to basically make you worthless to anyone and unable to function in society. No one will trade with you or employ you, no one will give you shelter or food, no one can trust you because you wont be able to supply verifiable info, you wont be able to use any money / credits, you can't call anyone, etc. Essentially they kill you off while still allowing you to walk around, breathe and sleep.
Disclaimer: I do not advocate such a sickening paradigm. But from what I've seen in my professional career in the telecom / IT world ... its well on its way.
