that's a good question.. but my initial statement wasn't about fitting a different era into the model of a different era, it was about imputing ideals of era X onto era Y. can we apply the ideals of the 7th century to the 21st century, and do so successfully?

i think so, because i believe the ideals espoused by the Prophet (SAW) and Khilafa Rashidun (RA) to be timeless. that's the key difference between those ideals and something modern and ephemeral such as the western idea of secular democracy.
