Okay, so as I mentioned in the thread, the source I was using for the Prophet ordering people killed for mocking him was ibn Ishaq. It's not an Islamic source – but it's a historical one nonetheless. It doesn't seem so contradictory given the surrounding stories of him pardoning those who killed people, on their own, initiative for mocking him.

And I figured there had to be some kind of basis for the ruling on killing those who mock the Prophet – my own assumption.
