It was at the END of the conversation. As he was leaving he asked, "Oh, btw..." which is when I knew what the whole conversation had been about. My friend set me up for the whole thing. I was totally blind about the whole thing until he asked that.

I was standing on the sidewalk of 29th street when this brother that had a table(you know how in nyc people sell stuff on the sidewalk, he was one of those ppl) walks up to me and says "somebody wants to know if youre married" and i was like "no, im not...who wants to know?" and he said "hes hiding in there *points to desi restaurant* you wanna see him???" and i got really scared because he looked like he was gonna call him out and i screamed "NOOOO! no its okay. id ont wanna see him!" and hes like "no its okay..he wont come near you. hell just peak out halfway" so he gestured to the guy to come out a little, and it was like this tallllllll white guy that looked like his one hand was the size of my entire body...and then hes like "can he have your parents number?" and then I said "um..can i ask my mom first?" and i called my mom and said "some guy just proposed to me and he wants your number..can i give it to him?" and she said "dont give out our number! ask him for his, and tell him ill call him myself" so then i got his number and a few days later my mom called him and hes like "Im half french and half south african" (to my mother this translates to "i am not human because i am not desi") so then my moms like "ok..so what do you do? how much education do you have?" and hes like "I did high school...Im a merchant." and my mom was like she said no, obviously. and what sucks is that after that I would ALWAYS see this guy at the masjid. And Id be really embarassed...and then one day like 6 months later he made that same book stand guy ask me if he got rejected because he's not pakistani. I was like why on EARTH would you ask someone that question?!

I know non-desi Muslim guys who are bitter for that same reason because some desi girls they were chasing after had to turn them down because of the parents' racist and ethnocentrist objections.

Re: Awkward Rishta Meeting Thread
well in this case my mom turned him down for the fact that he hadnt gone to college. My parents preferences are different than what they would accept. They PREFER Kashmiri or punjabi. if the persons not kashmiri or punjabi, then they would accept any tpye of pakistani, then indian, then everything else. everything other than pakistani or indian would be something that needed convincing, but i dont think theyd say no flat out if the guy was decent and educated. Its actually pretty uncommon for desi parents to just flat out reject non-desi ppl. Especially if they are otherwise a "good catch." In all my friends and family Ive never seen it happen. It def requires convincing though

Re: Awkward Rishta Meeting Thread
so this one time, me and my cousins were sitting at a party , eating
and this random uncle comes and joins our table..
we all thought it was awkward, but continued with our banter since he wasn't
saying anything, just eating quietly and laughing occasionally at our stupidity
so later, i was telling my grandmother about the uncle's behavior
and she goes "oh he islooking for a wife for his eldest son"
i was like you coulda told us..we're all too young..cept one of us

Re: Awkward Rishta Meeting Thread
Asallamu 'alaikum wa rahmatulLahi wa barakatuh
Some random guy wanted his sons to marry me and my sister.
Funny thing? I was fifteen and she was ten.
He wanted to wait until after college or something. Weeeeeird.

Re: Awkward Rishta Meeting Thread
Had two diff girls come up to me for the same guy at 2 consecutive ISNAs. The second time, his sister approached me in ISNA bazaar and started telling me his details, I stopped her in the middle and told her I might have talked to her bro and I don't think its gonna work out!

Re: Awkward Rishta Meeting Thread
According to my little sister.. some random women have inquired from my mum about "how I was getting on"
Since I don't attend random events.. a lot of "aunties" don't even know I exist.
Good times. Saves me from awkward situations.
Concerning family from "back home".. I'm very direct with my answers.. I don't beat around the bush..
I basically answer .. "Why would I want to marry someone from Pakistan?"
