i think it's really unclassy when the mahr of a girl is publicized etc..i cant stand it. i'd rather it be secret..info amongst the immediate family..cute and intimate.

It gets formally publicized at most weddings I've seen, like at the actual katb el-kitab / nikkah

It doesn't have to be though.. the shaykh can just say "the amount given" or whatever. I purposely did not want mine announced, the only people that need to know the mahr are the 2 witnesses. The shaykh doesn't even have to know. |

Yeah, I think ours said "the amount agreed on between us" or something along those lines. I also dislike when people try to find out what it is. I don't mind if someone is getting married and is trying to figure out what to do (even then I wouldn't tell them the amount, but maybe talk about the thought process or something) but I do mind when people try to find out for the sake of gossip or whatever. |

I've seen a few Pakistani nikkahs and the mahr is like 500 rupees and nobody even remembers it after.

That's what the savvy imams do--refer to the "agreed upon amount." But there are some maulvis (like the one who does our family nikahs), and he gets rather angry if you ask him to keep it secret. To him, it's part of the "publicizing of the Nikah. Full stop."
