Re: Pros of Being Engaged
Salika, I keep meaning to ask you sis; have you had your Nikaah and consider yourself engaged until the actual "giving away" ceremony/reception in ur culture??

Re: Pros of Being Engaged
Lol. Technically you are married though, right Salika?
Your 'engagement' is cool though cuz you're both...halaal now .
Other people's being engaged doesnt change anything except they stop looking elsewhere. But they still cant look at each other cuz they're still.....haraam .
I made like, no sense.

Re: Pros of Being Engaged
I never even got to the engagement part. She took one year to decide and the result was a negative

Re: Pros of Being Engaged
To answer all of your questions, yes, we had our nikkah so Islamically speaking we are married but culturally (I'm Arab), we're engaged because we did not have wedding ceremony (the equivilent of the rukhsati and walima, it's like one party for us).
But ya, having a nikkah'd engagement is super fun I hear it's the best part too but I hope we all have awesome marriages as well.
I don't like long engagements, especially if it's a long distance long engagement. We almost had one (almost 2 years!) so that I could finish school but alhamdulillah we found a way that I can finish up there so the wedidng is in December.

Re: Pros of Being Engaged
A lot of friction can come between a couple/families when you have long engagments (in desi terms) from like external forces- especially when other families were also trying to pursue either of the two . Its generally not the wisest thing, but hey, a lot of people do make it through without any problems

Oh I agree. Same happens even if you have the nikkah.
But word to the wise, marriage won't always solve those problems. It could really be a problem inherent in the relationship. Someone I was having problems in her engagement and they thought marriage would fix those problems but now they're going through a divorce
But ya, if people are having problems in the engagement, they should really reflect. Allahu alam.

Re: Pros of Being Engaged
When phone is engaged we can't ring in
When loo is engaged we can't get in
But when Woman is engaged but not wed
Other can take her to his honeymoon bed

Re: Pros of Being Engaged
I was engaged 7 months. Being married, setting up a home, and living life together is a million times better. alh alh alh.
