Bombay, August 15: The father of a 32-year-old Indian American woman, who allegedly set her house on fire killing herself and her two children in suburban Chicago's Naperville on Saturday, suspects foul play in the "horrific, tragic and senseless" incident.

Nimisha Tiwari, her four-year-old son Vakadham and 18-month-old daughter Ananya died in Cinnamon Creek neighbourhood of the city of Naperville on Saturday.

"There is nothing to indicate that this is anything more than a double murder-suicide investigation," said Naperville Police Chief David Dial.

However, Nimisha's father Chandresh Awasthi, a senior official with the state-run Nuclear Power Corp of India (NPCI) in Mumbai, said he suspected foul play and will request the Naperville police to investigate the case with an abetment-of-suicide angle against his son-in-law.

"I don't buy the suicide angle. It's just not possible. I spoke to Nimisha only hours before the incident on the fateful day and she did not show any indication of taking such a drastic step," Awasthi told IANS hours before he left for the US on Tuesday evening.

"Not only that, my son Nahant, who also lives in the US, spoke to his sister half an hour later."

Awasthi said that Nimisha and Anand Tiwari, who married in April 1999, had been having a marital discord for the past couple of years.

"My son-in-law used to regularly ill-treat my daughter and we had several times tried to bring about a reconciliation between the two. In fact, this April we had visited our daughter in Naperville and tried to persuade Anand to reform his ways, but to no avail.

"Though Anand was a loving father, he used to harass Nimisha repeatedly, so much so that she even had to lodge a police case restraining him to stay away from her. I just don't believe that Nimisha could kill her children. Her son Vakadham was just four years and her daughter Ananva only a toddler of 18 months," he said.

"She was good homemaker and loving mother to her children, she could have never done this."

The incident had come to light thanks to a call to the emergency number 911 by a passer-by.

Video surveillance indicated that at about 1.40 pm on Saturday Nimisha drove the family's minivan with her two children to a petrol pump where she filled a can with petrol. A petrol can was later found in the bedroom where the victims were found. The police also found a lighter on Nimisha.

There is also video surveillance tape showing she went to a toy store, where she bought a doll and Tommy the Train toy. Both the toys were also discovered in the bedroom.

Naperville Police believe Nimisha brought her two children to the second-floor master bedroom and doused the floor, probably with petrol, and set it afire.

The three were discovered in an unconscious state by the time fire fighters arrived in the afternoon.

Although the police were still looking for a motive, Naperville Police chief Dial said the Tiwaris had a history of marital discord.

The police ruled out the husband as a murder suspect as he was not at home when the fire broke out.

"The husband has taken a polygraph. There's no reason to disbelieve his story," Dial said.

Police officers had visited the Tiwaris in May this year following reports of a domestic dispute.

"Nimisha had sought an emergency order of protection on May 18, asking a court to order her husband to stay away from her, their home and the preschool their eldest child attended," Awasthi recalled.

"She also asked the court to order her husband to give her the children's passports and visas. She told the court Anand Tiwari was a domineering husband who manhandled her, took away the cheque book and credit cards and told the children 'Mom is crazy'.

"Anand used to tell his friends that she was 'going out of her mind'. He often taunted her to 'commit suicide'," Awasthi said.

Four days after the tragedy, the cars still come, each making a snail-slow pass by the Naperville home with the sooty, boarded-up windows and three white crosses poking up out of the front lawn.

Anand Tiwari could be found there Wednesday, kneeling down, rewriting the names on the crosses.

"The names were misspelled," said Tiwari, a day before funerals for his wife, Nimisha Tiwari, and their two children, Vardaan, 4, and Ananya, 18 months.

On Saturday, investigators say, Nimisha intentionally set fire to herself and the couple's children in the family's master bedroom. Investigators have said they don't know why she did it.

The children's father had no interest in offering his own thoughts, refusing to answer a reporter's questions Wednesday. But as he walked into his empty house on Nutmeg Lane, he turned and said:

"There is one thing you can do -- you can thank the passerby. At least the [911] call gave them some chance."

Tiwari was referring to the neighborhood family who spotted black smoke coming from the Tiwari home Saturday.

Jennifer Petterec, 14, was one of those who saw the smoke. She had this message for Tiwari on Wednesday: "I'm obviously sad that no one lived, and I hope that he [the father] can get through this with family help and friends."

Tiwari spent less than an hour at his home Wednesday. Before leaving, he removed his sandals, paused in front of the crosses and then drove away with a family friend.

Later in the day, saying a private farewell, Tiwari spent nearly two hours inside a Chicago funeral home with his children and wife.

A somber Tiwari carried a basketball -- a token intended for his son's casket -- as he and more than a dozen relatives entered the Christian Funeral Home on the Northwest Side.

Tiwari, who authorities say was in Chicago when the fatal fire erupted, left the funeral home without commenting.

The death of an 18-month-old Naperville girl was ruled a homicide on Sunday -- a day after she, her brother and mother all were killed in a "suspicious" fire in the family's home.

While investigators released a cause of death for Ananya Tiwari, autopsy findings for her mother, Nimisha Tiwari, 32, were not being discussed pending police and fire investigations into the case, authorities said.

Nimisha Tiwari, her toddler daughter, and 4-year-old son, Vakadham Tiwari, all died after the Saturday afternoon fire in the family's two-story frame house in the Cinnamon Creek subdivision. Police described the fire as "suspicious," and arson investigators were called in.

Tiwari's husband and father of both children, Anand Tiwari, is not a suspect because police verified his whereabouts for that morning, investigators said. Neighbors said he was taking a business class in downtown Chicago when the blaze broke out in the 1900 block of Nutmeg Lane around 3:30 p.m.

"He was extremely distraught" when he came to the police station, Naperville Police Sgt. Betsy Smith said.

Ananya, also identified as Anaya, suffered thermal burns, and the manner of death was a "homicide," according to a Cook County medical examiner's autopsy report. Both she and her mother died at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, which is why they were autopsied in Cook County.

Vakadham died at Edward Hospital in Naperville. The DuPage County medical examiner's office declined to discuss his autopsy.

Investigators on Sunday went to a Citgo gas station about a mile from the Tiwari residence and showed staff there a picture of a woman who appeared to be of Indian descent like Nimisha Tiwari, a source said. Police asked the staff if the woman pictured had been a customer on Saturday and said the inquiry was related to Saturday's fire.

While gas station staff apparently didn't recognize the woman, the station was expected to turn over digital video surveillance for Naperville police to review, the source said.

Firefighters found Nimisha Tiwari and her children lying unconscious in a second-floor bedroom -- the spot where the blaze started, investigators say.

Neighbors could hardly fathom that almost an entire family, who had lived on the block for about five years, was gone.

'Beyond shocking'

"It's beyond shocking. I see her all the time, talk to her all the time," said next-door neighbor Mangala Shet, who said the women talked about their children and reminisced about their native India.

Shet's husband spoke briefly to Anand Tiwari on Sunday morning, but Tiwari just wept, too grief-stricken to talk.

Shet described Nimisha Tiwari as a happy stay-at-home wife and mother, while another neighbor said he didn't see the woman much.

Residents on the block didn't notice any problems, but police records show officers were summoned to the Tiwari home in May for "something along the lines of a domestic dispute" between husband and wife, said Ken Parcel, Naperville Police investigations commander. Details weren't available, but apparently the call was about a "prior incident," Parcel said. No arrests were made, and there were no signs of violence.
