Father kills daughter on her wedding day

HARIPUR, PAKISTAN Nov 6: Two persons, including a bride, were killed here the other day.
According to the police Hakeem Khan, a resident of Mohmand Agency, now living in village Kotnajibullah, shot her daughter dead on her wedding day. Hakeem, who’s daughter was getting married to his daughter-in-law’s brother, was unhappy with the infamous wata-sata (give and take - brother and sister marrying another brother and sister) arrangement.
On the wedding day, when Hakeem came to see her daughter, Shamim Bibi, off at the time of rukhsati he shot her in the chest with a pistol and fled. She was rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
MUZAFFARABAD: 50 couples tie the knot at mass wedding

MUZAFFARABAD, PAKISTAN: Fifty couples from Muzaffarabad, which was devastated by the Oct 2005 earthquake, tied the knot at a mass wedding ceremony sponsored by a leading Pakistani construction company.
Governor of Punjab Lt-Gen (rtd) Khalid Maqbool was the chief guest. The ceremony, held on a lawn along the bank of Neelum river, was also attended by the AJK Minister for Religious Affairs Hafiz Hamid Raza, AJK Minister for Social Welfare and Women’s Development Shamim Ali Malick and other officials.
Chosen on the basis of economic needs, each couple received Rs5,000 ($83) from Bait-ul-Maal while each bride was given Rs100,000 ($1,666.66) by the sponsoring company.
Governor Maqbool praised the organisers for their philanthropic act and announced that mass wedding ceremonies would also be held in Bagh and Rawalakot. He said that Kashmiris would benefit from all welfare projects initiated by the Punjab government. He said a gathering of skilled labour was being planned where each youth would be given Rs20,000. ($333.33)
Five held for forced marriage

MIANWALI, PAKISTAN: Police arrested five people under the Women’s Protection Bill, District Police Officer Malik Abdul Aziz Khan told reporters. Ghulam Ahmed killed his brother Nur Ahmed over property in Muhallah Seelwan Kundian. The residents of the locality on pursuance of Maqsood and Muhammad Yaqub Sulhal brokered an agreement between both families and decided Asia Bibi, 18, daughter of the accused, be married to deceased’s son Muhammad Sharif, 30. On February 14, 2007, Muhammad Hafiz Ramzan, the prayer leader at the village mosque, performed Nikah of Asia and Sharif. Asia, who was not happy with her forced marriage, contacted rights activists.
On the complaint of rights activists, police arrested the would-be groom, his father, the prayer leader and two members of the village council under the Women’s Protection Bill.
