Calcutta, India October 28: Both Rizwanur Rehman and his wife Priyanka Todi were advised to 'convert' by their in-laws after their inter-religion marriage, but the couple had sought time to consider it.
Rizwanur was given the proposal to convert to Hinduism by his industrialist father-in-law Ashok Todi and two other senior members of his wife's family on August 31 night after the couple returned to his home, his elder brother Rukbanur told PTI today.
When asked about Rizwanur's response to the proposal by Todi, his brother Pradip and relative Anil Saraogi who visited Rehman's home that night, he said the computer graphics teacher did not responded to it.
The couple had registered their marriage under Special Marriages Act on August 18 and returned to Rizwanur's Tiljala home here on August 31 night.
About four days later, Priyanka was approached by Rizwanur's family members and neighbours to persuade her to convert to Islam.
To which, she had said that the couple would take a decision in this regard after her family's opposition to their marriage settled down, Rukbanur said.
The mysterious death of Rizwanur - whose body was found on railway tracks near Dum Dum railway station here far from his home on September 21 - is now being probed by the CBI following an orders by the Calcutta High Court. PTI

I thought the Muslim and Hindu communities stayed a bit separate there

ya he ended up getting killed. it happend a while ago, the investigations are still going on, but the police are already declaring it a 'suicide'. which we all know is a joke. interfaith marriages are not the norm in india, but they do happen every so often now and then. |

I'm not talking about hippies who think they're converting to Hinduism... I don't think they're accepted general by Hindus as Hindus.

oh you will be surprised. those hare krishnas are known as the 'iskon', or the 'international society of krishna concious'. They are extremely popular among the hindus living in the west, and plenty of white folks convert to them and attend thier temples. While plenty of Gujju Hindus follow some sect known as the 'swami narayan'. its more like a cult if anything. |

Inter-faith marriages in India are quite rare. There is a lot of racially-inspired crime and it's only Bollywood that portrays a lovey-dovey, happy-go-lucky, everybody-eat-jealebi-pray-to-Allah-and-Rama-Sita-Hare-Ram-Hare-Krishna couples who end up having fair-and-lovely kids who speak English.
The reality is in tiny, remote, pre-historic villages, people just get killed if they attempt anything like this.

but this wasnt a 'tiny, remote, pre-historic village', this case occured in an urban area, where the father of the bride is a wealthy industrialist. i dont understand why you fobs always blame everything on the 'backward' villager, you city slum-dwelling fobs are no different than they are. |

I think it depends on who you talk too but I know many Indian Hindus will say that Hinduism is like Judaism wheres it considered an ethnicity as well as a religion.
I thought Hinduism was considered Shirk?

it is, but hinduism is not an ethnicity. thats just the fanatic talk of the hindu fanatics/nationalists. its just a religion and nothing more. |

first of all jews are not an ethnicity. its just a religion. how can hindus be an ethnicity, when it transcends all different types of ethnic langauges. language determines ethnicity. italian is an ethnicity, german is an ethnicity. so how can hindus be an ethnicity? true in the sub-continent we do identify ourselves by our religion,thats because they are so many religions thats why. but it doesnt mean that i as a muslim identify it as my 'ethnicity' of course not. if anything i guess im ethnically 'hyderabadi' since it has it own culture, customs, dress, cusines, dialect of speaking, etc. |

Different people have different views, as for the Jews they identify with Judaism as their religion but also acknowledge they descend from the 12 tribes of Judah too. Obviously not all Jews do, mainly the ones in the Middle east pre the split of Palistine do. Now Isreali Jews recognised Jewish as an ethnicity but thats deceptive being as the majority(Israelis) are not decended from the Hebrews of old, they are mainly European Jews.
As for Hindus I can see why the Sub-Continet Hindus say its an ethnicity, but I did say it depends non who you talk too, many Western Hindus see it as both ways.
