Muslim Woman fired for wearing long face
Ottawa, November 21, 2007 (AFP) -- A Muslim woman suspended from her job as a clown at Canada's largest circus for wearing a face deemed too long by her employer has filed a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission, her lawyer told AFP Tuesday.
The woman had an unusually bad day, her lawyer said, and was actually trying very hard to keep smiling.
The Canadian Circus representative has claimed that the woman should have felt obligated to the contract she signed upon being hired, which clearly stated that 'circus employees must smile non stop within 5 minutes of clocking in at work, until 5 minutes after clock out'
The circus has apologized publicly on behalf of their human resources division, who is said to have wrongly assumed that Muslims generally have no problems smiling, as they do so 5 times a day whilst facing Mecca.
'We have now learnt that what they actually do is pray 5 times while facing Mecca,' said the President in a press conference.
