I was a disturbed child. I once collected a load of insects in a bucket and sealed the top with cling film and I didn't put holes in the top on purpose. And when my mum found out she slapped me very hard.

thought I was a boy, insisted on shorts.
would beat up the bullies.
In first grade took on four boys because one looked up my skirt.
The only way to get me out of the pool was to put on the Little Mermaid and the only way to get me away from the pool was to put the Little Mermaid on.
would eat leaves.
would talk to trees and the wind.
would draw Aladdin and Jasmine (totally obsessed).
Would sing for things from my cousins.
When my desi cousins said they wanted to be doctors.. I said I wanted to be a mermaid doctor.
Saw unicorns in the sky.

Re: when i was a kid...
Asalamu Alaikum,
When I was a kid, I used to run around singing the ManaMana Song, from The Muppet Show.
My dad just sent me the link, and I couldn't resist listening to it again.

Holy CRAP. How many people have done this?! Is it a Desi thing to tell your kids about the salt thing? My cousins and I did it too I feel so bad now, man.
But this was in Pakistan.. in my Grandmas backyard, we'd have BBQs allll the time at night. And the slugs would come out then. It would start with just one. I remember one time we poured salt on one, and then a TON more slugs came out everywhere.. We were soooo terrrified.
Only did it a handful of times, but it was still pretty mean/wrong.

Re: when i was a kid...
I loved animals when I was younger and if there was ever a sick animal, I'd try to fix it or rescue it.
Once a bird had fallen into this fountain we had in our yard and its leg was broken, I lifted it out of the water and decided I would give it a new leg, so I broke off the piece of its leg that was dangling and tried to make it a brand new leg...thank goodness someone intervened and we ended up taking it to the vet.
My older cousin's cat was missing the tip of its tail and she had brought it with her when she visited us one day. I took some feathers that my brother's bird had shed and chased the cat around for hours trying to grab its tail in order to give it a new tail.
Once I saw a birds nest with baby birds in the back yard. They were crying and their mother wasn't there. I decided that I had to feed them. I took large chunks of cheese and stuffed it down the birds throats (since their mouths were wide open)...They became quiet, so I thought they were full. I later found out I had choked them

Re: when i was a kid...
as salaamu alaikum,
when i was 3, our mailbox was on a wrought iron post. every day when the mail came, id run outside, climb the post, open the mailbox, grab the first piece of mail, jump down, look at it, drop it on the ground, then climb back up and repeat until themailbox was empty. i hadn't learned to read yet.
a year later when we moved out of our house. on the day the movers came and packed everything up, the house was empty and the carpets had just been freshly shampooed and steam cleaned. the last thing to take out was a big cooler full of all the food that was left in the fridge. so being the helpful young lad that i was, i tried to carefully slide it down the stairs and take it outside. the moment i got to the edge of the stairs, the cooler slipped from my hands and the whole thing crashed at the bottom of the stairs. it opened up and spilled its contents (including eggs, milk, and lots of desi food) all. over. the carpet. i started crying, "i was only trying to help! "
im sure there are many more stories, i'll share if i think of them.

Re: when i was a kid...
When I was 8 or 9, I got in a semi violent fight with my male cousin who was like a couple years younger.
I remember getting in mad trouble later because apparently I had kicked him in the 'wrong' spot. I was like, he's not even hurt, and no one cares what the fight was about anyway but no one listened and they were like DON'T EVER KICK A BOY LIKE THAT EVER AGAIN

Re: when i was a kid...
When I was like 8, one of my aunts got a burn on her face.... It wasn't even that bad but I was SO freaked out by it that I refused to ever ever be in the same room as her... for MONTHS. I wouldn't go to her house or anyone elses house if I knew she was going to be there..and if she was, I'd RUN for my life. One time I spent 5-6 hours in my grandmas backyard/garden because I didn't wanna see my aunt (she was inside the house).
I suck.

Re: when i was a kid...
So when i was little, i used to give my parents heck about eating. i hated it. i hated food unless it was chips or candy. my mom would have to spend hours trying to feed me. so when i was 4, she was feeding me a plate of some rice, and i would take a bite, run to my room, and back. i did this until a whole plate was finished. My mom was super happy that i had finished an entire plate without giving her problems. So i asked for another plate of rice. my ecstatic mother got another plate of rice, and i did the same. bite, run to room, come back, bite, room, back. When that plate was finished, i asked for a third. My mother was in love with me for jumping out of my strike on eating without her having to come to the point where shed have to liquify the food and pour it down my throat, so she got another plate. i did the same for two-three more bites when she started to get curious and decided that this was a bit too unnatural for a 4 year old. after giving me a bite, she followed me to where i went, and found me spitting out the mouthful behind a suitcase in the closet....not only that but a wet chewed up pile of rice was there to greet her. according to her, i got the smack of my life for doing that and she made me sit on a chair right in front of her and forced food into my mouth.
i was such a clever child, mashallah.
my parents thought i'd never come out of my food-sucks-i-refuse-to-eat-it stage.
except around the age of 12, i fell in love with food.
