Moving Out
AsSalamu' Alaykum,
I put a deposit down on an apartment today. I'm kinda siked about it.
I move out June 1st and will be there by myself for about a 1 1/2 months since the hubster will still be living in NJ to attend his last semester InshaAllah.
So first things first-- where do I buy pepper spray and ummmm perhaps maybe possibly a stun gun or I'll settle for a bbgun, either or?
Oki, now since I got that out of the way-- I'll be BROKE. B-R-O-K-E. BRRRRROOOKKKKKKKKKKKKKE. So let's all come together and come up with ways how I can save money.
1.) A week or two before I move in, I can make a few visits to Burger King and load up on napkins, ketchup, and mayonnaise.
2.) I plan on using all natural cleaning solutions, so I'll save money there. [Water/Lemon Juice/Vinegar/Salt]
3.) I won't have internet/tv/homeline for a couple months...it's not like I'm paying for that now but at least I'm not considering it a necessity right?
...no internet.
4.) I won't have a microwave-- so I'm not sure what to do in terms of meals. It is the summer so maybe I should look into meals that don't require heat? Again, I'll be broke- so this gives me just sandwiches? Ehhh. Good thing mom will be 30ish mins away.

Re: Moving Out
Thrift stores, consignment shops, and stuff next to garbage bins are your friend. The end of the semester is approaching. Park yourself close to dormatory garbage bins, you'll be amazed what people throw out.

Re: Moving Out
You know, more people should dumpster dive at department stores. Just from working at mine, I'm shocked at what we have to chuck on a weekly basis. I get angered by it actually. I don't know why they just can't donate it.

Re: Moving Out
George Foreman grill... you can get them for like 30 bucks. They'll provide you with heat for food. And even your apartment if you need it.

Re: Moving Out
Oh yeah! I got one of those as a gift. It's his favorite thing- the only thing in the kitchen besides the microwave he knows how to use. Though, I don't know how to use it-- and isn't it only for meat?
Being broke, I'll be a forced vegetarian for awhile.

Re: Moving Out
maybe your parents can help you out? i know when my husband and i moved to our place, our parents bought everything for our home as a gift. couch, coffee table, dining table set, bed, etc. maybe you can do once a month cooking - cook a whole bunch of meals in one day and freeze it. oh, but then you would need a microwave. hmm.

Re: Moving Out
I inherited most of my kitchen when I moved out. My parents gave me all their old ugly dishes, and beat up pots and pans when they got a new set. My baking dishes are probably older than I am. Parents are great

Re: Moving Out
Hehehe.
MashaAllah, everyone was so generous with gifts when we got married- so my kitchen is pretty much set. I just don't have furniture, which isn't the biggest deal. It'll come with time InshaAllah. I'll be bringing my mattress and throwing that sucker on the floor. I'll also be bringing my Pooh Bear towel.
It's it soooo cute? It could probably double as a blanket.
Anywayyy, I decided against having a washer/dryer in the apartment- the location where it was was just awful. I rather do without than have to see it like that every day. Although, I'm afraid to go to the laundry mat by myself. Maybe I can wash most of my clothes in the bathtub?

You can do grill cheese on it, but it kinda squishes it unless you use some serious bread and cheese.
Maybe get a magic bullet? If you get some good protein powder you can make smoothies that last a month. And I worked it out, every shake is like 2 bucks worth of the powder, with 26 grams of protein! So that's like a steak dinner for 3 bucks in two minutes. I think it's very economical.

Re: Moving Out
Ramen noodles cost 12 cents/pack and I'm sure it provides all your daily nutrition requirements.

Re: Moving Out
why dont you just stay at your parents house til your husband can be there with you (and you can save a little money)? it seems like its gonna be so hard on you being there alone.

Re: Moving Out
do what everyone else does, go home on the weekend and do your laundry there. Your parents won't mind, they'll just be happy to see you.
When I first got married, I didn't have any furniture either. I just had a matress, and some sheets, and that was it. After a few months, I went to a thrift shop and got a loveseat for $20. I had that couch for a long long time.

you can get pepper spray pens on ebay. i've tested them out they are pretty good for some close range action. small and easily concealable.
my friend got his taser on ebay i believe. oh my god that thing is really LOUD and scary.
i think you can get a bbgun at any walmart in PA.

good luck on the big move
