My great aunt died of breast cancer in her early 30's and suffered a lot before her death. My mom is still affected by it because she was initially raised by her aunt and it was like losing a parent. Yet, I still haven't been able to convince my mom to go for a mammogram. You'd think having two doctors in your immediate family, as well as losing someone so close to you, would be enough.

Hussain87, oh shut the hell up.

laimuun: yea, having to do all the things your mom does around the house (clean out the fridge, wth?!) is a bit of a shocker.

I know! It's crazy! Lol.

PhD, I'll be out of the house for the entire day into most of the night. I'll be arriving home from work around 10.30ish pm. I figure I can work on the house, pop in some DVDs on my laptop, have some girlfriends over?

I'm nervous about meeting my neighbors because I don't really want anyone in close proximity to know that I'll be living alone and take advantage of that, you know? Yes, I always think of the worst case scenarios, I can't help it. So I rather get to know them once my hubster comes.

zzzz, nightlights are a must! Hey does anyone remember the Arthur episode [ilikemyscarf totally should remember!] when everyone finds out that Binky uses a nightlight?

My heart goes out to those with relatives fighting breast cancer. I had to go for a few tests that left my family unnerved for days. I didn't even want to look at my parents for I could see the fear in their eyes. Alhumdulilah, so far the tests have come back negative.

Just got this in an email:

Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

LOL, my neighbors are going to hate me.

Congrats on the apartment

To save money:

- Buy most of your food and other household items in bulks on a weekly or monthly basis. Then set a budget for things like veggies, fruits, etc that you can buy every couple of days. Try to stick to the budget. Cook as much as you can instead of eating out.

- If you buy furniture from thrift stores or flea markets, you can give them a makeover by staining or painting them. Make sure you sand the furniture and use a primer before you stain or paint though. You can also reupholster any furniture with fabric from discount stores, and a staple gun.

- If you know how to sew or know someone who sews, you can make your own window treatments, throw pillow covers, bed linens, table linens, etc. It's very cost effective, and you can get as creative as you want. Look for unconventional ways of using fabric you find, and you can make unique stuff.

Good luck

breast cancer should be renamed "northern female cancer" 'cause then you can have "southern female cancer" and no one's virgin ears will be offended.

and it works for men, too.

It's it soooo cute? It could probably double as a blanket.

Anywayyy, I decided against having a washer/dryer in the apartment- the location where it was was just awful. I rather do without than have to see it like that every day. Although, I'm afraid to go to the laundry mat by myself. Maybe I can wash most of my clothes in the bathtub?

Hey sis, check out The Freecycle Network for some free stuff. I guess 99 cent stores and what not are a good thing too. Ramen noodles and ketchup saved me many nights in college when I was broke as a joke...

Good luck and congrats! Being on your own is a great feeling

I went to a flea market today with my mother-in-law. She bought us a few pieces for the house. I can't wait to refurbish them. I'll try to take before and after pictures.

And oh my gosh I'm moving out in like two weeks.

heba: foodwise: plan what youre going to eat everyday in advance. for the week. so when you do your shopping youre only buying ingredients you need.

Yeah I planned on doing that. I've been trying to think up of meals.

Beans & Rice: This is my favorite dish and by far is one of the cheapest [still despite the rice shortage]. Cans of beans [and other can foods actually] are really cheap and you have stores like Shop Rite that do the Can Can sale. I'll get a bulk container of Salsa from BJ's and call it a meal.

Tortilla Wraps: This is such a staple food for me. Moreso than slice bread. With tortilla wraps, I can wrap up the left over beans & rice. I can have it for breakfast with some eggs and a slice of cheese. I can dip it in some hummus. I can even make multiple breakfast wraps in one shot and freeze em. So on the days that I'm rushing out the door, instead of stopping to get something to eat, I can pop it in the microwave and go.

Canned fruit/veggies Frozen veggies/fruit: Last longer, I can mix the canned fruit with ice cubes and have a smoothie for a meal. Canned veggies are also sides and like the beans, are dumb cheap. I can even throw some veggies into a can of tomato soup. I can stir-fry up the frozen veggies and place them on top of a bed of rice.

Tomato soup: As I said before, I can throw veggies in and/or I can even get some frozen ravioli's and throw them bad boys in. Cheap but totally filling.

Eggs: Can have for any meal. Breakfast wraps, top a salad with em, and I can have an eggsalad sandwich.

Tuna: Cheap and so versatile. I can have a tuna wrap, a tuna salad, tuna patties [with rice], tuna burgers, tuna smoothies...lol jk on the last one.

Popcorn: Awesome cheap easy quick healthy snack. I can pop a whole bunch and throw it in some bags. For an extra umph I can add pretzels [cheap] or change up the flavoring.

Potatoes: I can bake several of them at a time and freeze em. I can stuff em with some steamed frozen veggies and boom bam thank you ma'am. I can also dice a couple potatoes and freeze em. So on some mornings I can make up some hash browns. I can also mash them and when they aren't mashed I can fry them and have french fries. I can do a bunch of different meals with potatoes alone.

I would do pasta dishes but pasta is getting so expensive, no? Well, since it's just me [and soon to be him] I think one box will last us at least two meals. Not bad come to think of it. I can make some pasta with stir fry, pasta with sauce, butter & herbed pasta, pasta in soup...

I think this is a pretty decent list of foods that are versatile and not costly, no?
