Salam Alaykum,

We've been discussing this topic in my sexuality class for some time now and it got me thinking. What if you had a transgendered child? Or how about an androgynous child? Would you let the kid decide what he/she wants to be when they grow up? Or would you go ahead and make the decision with your spouse to detemine the gender of your child early on? Would you go with what they want to be (psychologically) as opposed to what they really are physiologically?

I'd smack some sense into them. God has already detereminded what my child would be. I'd try and help them understand why they are who they are, and accept it. Maybe read some qurana dn what not. Than I'd marry them off as soon as they hit puberty. Being transgender is haram in so many ways.

What would you do?!

You don't understand what she wrote. She doesn't mean psychological disorders, rather physical ones. i.e they may look like a boy but they got more female tissue than male. I think they're also called hermaphrodites. Google it if you wanna know more. Again this has nothing to do with being Gay or lesbien.

She asked, what if you had a transgendered child. I was basing my answer on that. She said OR androgynous, which yes is a hermaphrodite. I answered part of her post not all of it. Thanks.

There is a prescription for this. Scholars have thoroughly written on this topic. From what I know the child is to be raised normally until the age of puberty where it is determined and then followed by that method. It is allowed for you to medically treat the child. This is generally decided after careful examination on the child's real gender, ie: figuring out which hormones the child has more of. Since most of these trans gendered and transsexual people have a natural inclination towards such things, they should try to pray more and not commit sexual acts. The transexuals or Mukhannath's are not discriminated against since most of the time it is caused naturally... However, if you go out of your way and change genders, then that is considered SODOMY and is strictly forbidden in Islam.

A mukhannath is the one ("male to female transsexual") who carries in his movements, in his appearance and in his language the characteristics of a woman. There are two types; the first is the one in whom these characteristics are innate, he did not put them on by himself, and therein is no guilt, no blame and no shame, as long as he does not perform any (illicit) act or exploit it for money (prostitution etc.). The second type acts like a woman out of immoral purposes and he is the sinner and blameworthy.' (Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi, ca 1250 AD)


There was a case during the Prophet's (pbuh) time.

Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 41, Number 4910: Narrated AbuHurayrah: A mukhannath who had dyed his hands and feet with henna was brought to the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him). He asked: What is the matter with this man? He was told: Apostle of Allah! he affects women's get-up. So he ordered regarding him and he was banished to an-Naqi'. The people said: Apostle of Allah! should we not kill him? He said: I have been prohibited from killing people who pray. AbuUsamah said: Naqi' is a region near Medina and not a Baqi'.

It is clear that this kind of stuff happened before. As in the story of the people of Lut and how they were destroyed.

I'd love them the same as any of the other kids and encourage them continue to live life as everyone else. If they want to choose, they can choose and if they want to be part of their own group, it's all good.

depends of the spouse don't u think?! and puberty now a days start as early as 9. It was really bad sarcasm due to lack of sleep. Anyways what would you do, o Smart one?!
