Yes. African-Americans are more likely to discipline their children physically than Caucasian Americans. Same goes for Desis. Most Desi kids fear the velan (I dare someone to correct that spelling), except in the case of Gujaratis, who use toothpicks instead of velans. (because they're underdeveloped) (RACIAL STEREOTYPE ALERT).

Time-outs work wonders with children between the ages of 2 and 5. For children who are older, talking to them is more effective, in my experience anyway. And time-outs for children under the age of 2 are futile when the child is hyperactive. They won’t sit unless you sit with them and then they don't always understand why they're being told to sit aside for a minute or two and understanding why is the key to successful time-outs.

While working in the baby room last year, I had one little boy who drove me up the wall. He knew exactly how to get my attention and believe me, it was never the positive kind. Ignoring* him was dangerous to him and those around him, so I never did that but when I succumbed to his challenging behaviour [because we're not allowed to call it misbehaving] he got what he wanted. I tried everything. Even time-outs [he was 17months old]. His parents thought he was an absolute angel and didn't want to hear otherwise. And that's where the problem was.

I hate when parents don't want to believe that their child is the devil in disguise. You have to be consistent. If I’m putting little Georgie on time-out when he head-butts another child, his parents should do the same at home.

I have the knack for that formula. But I think it only works with kids that aren’t your own. I’m really close to my two nieces and we laugh, joke and play all the time and they hardly ever do anything wrong but when they do, that’s it. They won’t look at me when they know they’re wrong. They know exactly where they stand with me and sometimes I think my lectures are [a lot more] more effective than their parents’ yelling. [You’re right, this is hard to explain].

I’d like to have that kind of relationship with my own kids insha Allah but again, I don’t think it’s something that can be achieved with ones own offspring.
