Personally, I think that's exactly what's happening.

People with hopes for a better future for themselves and their children don't readily sacrifice themselves on a daily basis like that, whether they believe it's a just cause or not. Even in Palestine, people don't carry out such attacks very often. It's just very unlikely for people to ignore the occupation and attack their own people like beasts.

One shouldn't judge these actions before asking "who benefits". The US benefits more from this state of anarchy than the militias. It's a way to distract those who would otherwise be targeting American troops. Just keep them busy fighting each other so they won't concentrate their efforts on sending more American troops back home in coffins.

I'd have to have a look, but it's difficult to get straight stats on that kind of thing. Judging from most third party reports however, the vast majority of civilian deaths in this part of the conflict are a result of fighting amongst various local groups.

As for conspiracy theories regarding Americans being behind car bombings, I'm skeptical. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'd just need to see something more regarding it.

No, we're not. We don't identify ourselves as "same people". They identify themselves with the region they refer to (and is internationally known) as Iraq, so they are the same people of Iraq.

Which apparently doesn't matter as much to them as other divisions - ethnic, religious, tribal whatever. These are the fault lines along which the groups seem to be operating, and those we were talking about. Regardless of how we decide to categorize them, they see themselves as being different from each other.

I don't think you can say that about the majority of Iraqis. Surely there are people who feel strongly about their ethnic and sectarian affiliations, but it is well known that Iraq is the one country in the Middle East where intercultural marriages between ethnic and religious groups are very, very common.
