That's only because this totalitarian regime takes from its people and gives nothing back. They also have very little innovation in China. Look at brands around the world. How many famous brands of anything are Chinese? China is only the factory of the world.
Food for thought: Shenzhen is one of the most modern and fastest growing cities in China with growth rates of about 20% or more, and yet, only about 10% of the populace is middle class. China has wealth and is seen as an economic juggernaut, but most of the wealth is in very few hands. The gap between the rich and the poor is staggering.
