Fitna, an anti-Islamic film made by Dutch politician Geert Wilders that equates Islam with violence, debuted on Thursday at Web site LiveLeak.com, only to be taken down a day later following threats to LiveLeak's staff.

LiveLeak on Friday afternoon issued a statement explaining its decision: "Following threats to our staff of a very serious nature, and some ill-informed reports from certain corners of the British media that could directly lead to the harm of some of our staff, LiveLeak.com has been left with no other choice but to remove Fitna from our servers.

"This is a sad day for freedom of speech on the net but we have to place the safety and well being of our staff above all else. We would like to thank the thousands of people, from all backgrounds and religions, who gave us their support. They realized LiveLeak.com is a vehicle for many opinions and not just for the support of one..

HEAR THIS, LIVELEAK.COM: if you continue to host this film that says we always resort to threats, indimidation and violence, we'll kill you.

On March 28th, 2008 Geert Wilders - a Dutch politician - will release a long-awaited controversial movie that promises to inflame defensive (and he hopes, offensive) reaction from the Muslim world. This film is titled, "Fitna".

The objective of this fifteen minute film will be to persuade the world that the Qur'an is a "fascist book" that promotes and encourages Muslims to kill.

Our beloved sibling in Allah, we ask you to be patient and proactive. Because we are aware of the launch date, this has given us ample time to contact our scholars who will prepare a full response on behalf of all Muslims. This response will be globally launched on March 30, 2008 at Unsilenced

We ask you by Allah, to maintain your patience, and to defend back with the most effective shield of this day and age; knowledge. Although we have every right to be enraged and offended, we will have to be strategic in the way we utilize our emotions. Let us follow the example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and let us deprive those who attack the religion of Allah from the feeling that they have succeeded at igniting our fury.

At this stage, I don't think it should be ignored esp. when the mainstream press is helping to spread the message.

Communication is a great thing

I think people should all watch it --- Take points --- And give it such a reply (In a form of another film) that tell the truth and exposes the author of Fitna for what he really is.

If the Muslims are clever -- They could bring about the death of his political career - Make him look like a fool so nobody will ever take him seriously.

Finally the UN's new chief, Hon ki poon (whatever the chang's name is..) decides to declare the movie "offensively Anti-Islamic" after like a week of its release...and that doesn't even make any newspaper headline.


On the other hand, US senators call China to be more lenient towards the Dalai Lama .....(does anyone really care about the Dalai Lama in the US???) ...and that makes headline news..

Like...Wow! So much hypocrisy.

I don't think that was a very effective response. The 'Fitna' movie didn't just splice together violent verses from the Quran with images of terrorism... it linked the two with people explicitely citing those texts and crediting God's will in general as justification for the violence.

This piece doesn't really do that. It presents violent Old Testament texts and then cuts to images of Iraq. If it wanted to do the same thing, it could have quoted those responsible explicitly using those OT passages as a justification. The documentary segment included didn't do that either.

You're nit picking. The point was to demonstrate how verses from any religious book can be misused. Whether clips of people explicitly citing those verses to justify their actions are used or not, is irrelevant to that point.

I'm not nit picking at all. It isn't so much the Geert crowd taking these passages out of context that's alarming. Rather, it's certain Muslims in influential positions who take them out of context, and incite others to act on it.

'Fitna' included this demonstrated element (albeit poorly), the other video did not.
