MMA didn't stand a chance, because of their infighting...they couldn't agree on whether to take part in the elections or not...some of them boycotted, and others ran without their leader's approval, etc...so they were guaranteed to lose. In any case, even without this chaos in their ranks, they are a party that has lost its popularity completely. Not even religious people want to vote for them.
What is interesting is that Imran Khan boycotted the polls, which seems to have really back-fired on him. He boycotted because he thought it would be a farce and rigged...but it seems that the elections were actually free, fair, and transparent! Musharraf's party is being routed, so it doesn't seem like it was rigged at all. I bet Imran Khan is cursing himself right now for why he didn't run.

So, when you combine extreme corruption with negative results, they totally failed. As far as the law and order situation goes, by supporting the radical elements in society, they actually made it worse. NWFP gets a lot of money from the central government. Where did that money go? They didn't repair roads, build school, hospitals, womens sporting facilites, nothing. My husband came to the US in 2001, and returned to Peshawar in 2004, 2006, and this last December. He tells me that the city didn't used to be the way it is now. In his words, it's turned to rubble.
So yeah, I'm glad they lost their shorts. NWFP needs a government, secular or otherwise, that cares enough about the people to do something OTHER than just line their pockets and take vacations in Dubai and London.

shorts are not haram, so long as they cover from naval to knee. If you're refering to the shorts you wear under shalwar kameez, you're right, they don't wear them, but it's not haram. Islam doesn't require you to wear underwear. That why the kameez has to be long, so that if your nara fails and your pants fall, you're still covered.

Yeah, by all accounts, they're corrupt and in disarray. In the past few years, it's gotten really bad; but how is that different from any of the other parties?

The other parties at least did things like fix roads, fund education, hospitals, and keep the law and order situation in check. I'm not saying the other parties were wonderful, or perfect. I don't think anything is wonderful in Pakistani politics, but the MMA really betrayed peoples trust.

I did. Dawn.com has a table of parties with seats and all. mqm apparently has 20 percent more seats in sindh, and 4 more seats in the NA then they had before.
Rest assured, altaf may not be credited with this small triumph. The local elected officials actually have been trying to do better for their local niebourhoods, which is why mqm is staying in power. Not because people like altaf. that would be ludicrous.

shoot, i was going to show you this link by dawn.com. its a pretty objective english paper and has been in circulation for about 60 years. but that link is gone right now. it showed how many seats and what not.
In short, no. The party (PML-Q) that aligned with musharraf lost half of its constituents. PML-Q have won nothing close to what the other two parties won. Benazirs party (PPP) had the most seats, followed by nawaz sharifs (PML-N).
Interestingly, the MMA, the religious wacky party lost everything. Their spectacular demise was even overshadowed by the fact that a secular party overtook them! the ANP. ANP campaigned on changing civil society, preventing further talibanization, bringing back dance and culture which was banned.
