Re: Official Election 2008 thread
BIDEN: You're very kind suggesting my only Achilles Heel is my lack of discipline.
Others talk about my excessive passion. I'm not going to change. I have 35 years in public office. People can judge who I am. I haven't changed in that time.
And, by the way, a record of change -- I will place my record and Barack's record against John McCain's or anyone else in terms of fundamental accomplishments. Wrote the crime bill, put 100,000 cops on the street, wrote the Violence Against Women Act, which John McCain voted against both of them, was the catalyst to change the circumstance in Bosnia, led by President Clinton, obviously.
Look, I understand what it's like to be a single parent. When my wife and daughter died and my two sons were gravely injured, I understand what it's like as a parent to wonder what it's like if your kid's going to make it.
I understand what it's like to sit around the kitchen table with a father who says, "I've got to leave, champ, because there's no jobs here. I got to head down to Wilmington. And when we get enough money, honey, we'll bring you down."
I understand what it's like. I'm much better off than almost all Americans now. I get a good salary with the United States Senate. I live in a beautiful house that's my total investment that I have. So I -- I am much better off now.
But the notion that somehow, because I'm a man, I don't know what it's like to raise two kids alone, I don't know what it's like to have a child you're not sure is going to -- is going to make it -- I understand.
I understand, as well as, with all due respect, the governor or anybody else, what it's like for those people sitting around that kitchen table. And guess what? They're looking for help. They're looking for help. They're not looking for more of the same.
was it just me or did he choke up while saying that?

You've got a lot of growing up to do if you think voting is the solution to the world's problems.

Re: Official Election 2008 thread
women voters:
Quote:
45% of all women surveyed have a negative opinion of Palin, compared to 42% who view her positively. Fifty-two percent of men have a favorable opinion, while 35% are in the unfavorable camp.
Those numbers do not compare well with those of her direct competitor in the general election, Joe Biden. Among women, the Democratic candidate for vice president is viewed positively by 51% and negatively by 27%. Biden has an overall favorable to unfavorable split of 50%-31%, while McCain's is 54%-38% and Obama's rests at an enviable is 60%-33%.
|
Quote:
Biden and the Democrats, meanwhile, will continue to try and exploit Palin's troubles with voters — especially women. In his own interview with Couric, Biden responded to the same question about disagreements with the Supreme Court by targeting a key issue for women: domestic violence.
Biden, who for years chaired the Senate Judiciary committee, went on at length about his authorship of the Violence Against Women Act and how the Court had ruled against him on a particular provision. Expect to see more of that tonight at the debates.

VAWA btw is awesome. we get to help so many victims of domestic abuse through VAWA at my internship...

I'm not being a smartass, I'm criticizing your naive tone directed at people who consciously choose not to vote. If you think voting is going to solve the world's problems, then you're pretty dumb.

Re: Official Election 2008 thread
i thought biden came across as articulate and knowledgeable. palin came across as very, very rehearsed, childish, and like she was trying too hard. the only reason people think she didn't get wrecked is because she's done such a good job of lowering expectations horribly.
every time palin tries to act "folksy" and "cute," i want to kick her stupid teeth in. "you betcha," "darn right," etc. she's running as half of a presidential ticket. it's a little bit more serious than running for class president or trying to give answers that you think will please judges at a beauty pageant. being "cute" is not a qualification, nor does it suit a 45 year old mother of 5 to try to pander to an audience by acting like an attention-starved toddler. it's freaking embarrassing.
mccain really put his foot in it with this vp pick. but realistically, it was the only chance he had. after obama's dnc speech & prior to the palin pick, he looked like he was about to get buried anyway. basically, what he's doing is gambling on the stupidity of americans, which isn't necessarily always a bad bet.
as much as i don't like hillary clinton, i would've loved to see her debate sarah palin as the vp on obama's ticket. as a woman, she wouldn't have had to pull any punches out of fear of republican pundits whining about what a big mean old man she was to the innocent cute widdle girl. she would've made this idiot cry. of course, if obama had picked hillary, mccain would've never picked palin.
john mccain is a scumbag and a liar. i can understand that - i expect that. but sarah palin is stupid. and that pisses me off. actually, no.. that amuses me. it's people defending it or refusing to recognize it that pisses me off. the very fact that she exists in this sphere offends me.

That was kind of mean. I don't see where she said it was going to solve the world's problems.... and I think she was directing her statement at people who were too lazy to vote.

Re: Official Election 2008 thread
Quote:
Hi,
Today, I donated 10.00 to Obama's cause. It's not a lot, is it? But you know, through COBRA, I pay $1200 a month to keep my family insured. Of course, I have a $2,000 mortgage and a family to feed.
Today, I received in the mail a denial letter from Pacificare just for regular medical insurance. They denied my family and I healthcare because my husband is diabetic and a couple of years ago I went in because I had an ulcer. It's been years since I went in to checked for the ulcers. We were hoping that if my son and I were put on Pacificare separate from my husband, we would save $400. I cried when I saw that denial letter. I also watched the debate.
Does Sarah Palin understand the tears that came down my face today? She was up there winking and smiling while I cried. $5,000 does what for the uninsured? We pay $1,200 a month for COBRA just to stay insured. What happens when COBRA runs out. What's my son to do? She doesn't even hold her own child, how does she understand what I go through? She lives in a shell and claims to understand those tears that came down my face today.
This is the dire reality of many families out there.
We need a change.

also, here's yet ANOTHER palin blunder... i've lost track now..
