Re: Official Election 2008 thread
A lot of people are fed up with the GOP in the states, which is why the GOP has suffered major setbacks, and lost elections in areas that have been republican strongholds for a very long time. Some are pointing to this as an indicator of the GOP's future demise, so any immediate conclusions would be premature at best.

Re: Official Election 2008 thread
what separates obama from the other candidates is that he has had meaningful interaction with muslims and the muslim world growing up, so I'm inclined to believe all his rhetoric about israel and pakistan is really just to make himself electable at the present moment. when the time comes to pull the trigger, I don't think he'll actually do it. he's a lanky intellectual who'd rather discuss and negotiate his problems away than act from the gut like bush and employ violent force. I just don't see him doing it.

Don't hold your breath.
Democrats and Republicans do the same thing, just via different means.
Republicans and Neocons are all about outright military action, Dems will do the same thing but through crippling sanctions and embargoes.

You sure know how to diss, masha'Allah.
After reading up the hadith you cited, I came to the conclusion that it refers to Fitra, nature, and it has a broader context than just religious upbringing. Everyone knows that a person is born innocent and he/she is bestowed with the intelligence to make an informed decision about his/her religious affiliation. Person A born off a Muslim father is recognised to be a Muslim by other people. Person B not born off a Muslim father is recognised to be a non-Muslim by other people. Either would be considered innocent in the eyes of Allah till he/she reaches maturity. Either person may choose to change religious affiliations later on in his/her life. My question was regarding whether Obama apostasised or not.
Regardless, based on the above posts by smart people, my question has been answered. Thanks for your help.

Re: Official Election 2008 thread
I have to say, it's really funny how everyone calls Obama a "black man." Especially when they call Hillary Clinton a "white woman" or McCain a "white man."

Re: Official Election 2008 thread
All Presidential candidates have to pledge blinded unyielding support for Israel. They don't get a look-in otherwise.
But maybe we should look at it like this: Think less about the endearing qualities of Obama vs the not-so-endearing qualities about Obama, and more about what would America look like under the other guy. It's only a 2 horse race remember.
If it's not Obama, it's McCain. So the question is not, how much do you love or hate Obama, but can you honestly say you'd prefer a McCain America?

Re: Official Election 2008 thread
I think he should Edwards as his VP. I don't think Hilary and him would make a good team and Edwards could easy gain support from the general population.
