Dubai sets record with Breast Cancer Ribbon

Dubai, November 17: Dubai set a world record yesterday by unveiling the largest motif of ‘Breast Cancer Ribbon’ made of thousands of carnation flowers at Zabeel Park.

The Breast Cancer Ribbon made by Dubai Health Care City broke the existing record of 12.8-metre height set in Canada. Officials of the Guinness Book of World Records, who were present, said the ribbon had a height of 29 metres.

The record-breaking event was held to reach out to millions in the world with yet another life-saving message and as a dramatic reminder to women about the importance of conducting regular self-examination and getting over the fear due to the lack of knowledge about breast cancer.

Dr Muhadditha Al Hashimi, CEO, Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), said: “One of the biggest challenges we face in the region continues to be the lack of awareness about the benefits of early detection of breast cancer. “According to estimates, 70 per cent of breast cancer cases in the region are not reported until they are in an advanced stage, as compared to 30 per cent or less in countries like the US. Through this initiative, we seek to optimise the awareness level among women and help them realise that their chances of survival are better through early detection.”

The unveiling of the ribbon, which was decorated with 1,500 carnation flowers, was followed by the Avon Walkathon and other entertainment activities.

Dr. Ayesha Al-Mutawa, Chair of CSR Committee and Director of Quality Improvement Department at the Centre for Healthcare Planning and Quality, said: “DHCC’s corporate social responsibility campaigns always target the involvement of our community members. This event reaches out to women to join as partners in the fight against breast cancer.” Survivors of breast cancer were presented with flowers as a mark of honour.
