Shooting Spree at Swiss Islamic Center

Zurich, November 14: A gunman used a military assault rifle to fire on a dozen worshipers at an Islamic centre at the Swiss city of Lausanne late on Monday, injuring one seriously, police said.

"He injured one person seriously before worshipers immobilised him on the ground," according to a police statement.

The man entered the centre and fired over a dozen rounds toward a prayer room, police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel added.

Sauterel said a possible motive for the shooting had not been established and that the man had acted alone. Police had scrambled to intercept a man carrying a weapon openly on the streets of Bussigny-pres-Lausanne near Lausanne.

The man used his military weapon and ammunition, according to the police statement. A 23-year-old local man was detained in connection with the attack.

Switzerland's military system allows soldiers to keep their weapons and ammunition at home, which has become the object of controversy in the wealthy Alpine country following recent attacks and high suicide rates involving military weapons kept at home.

In 2004 in Lausanne, a man wielding a knife attacked a Muslim prayer leader and wounded three others at an Islamic centre. He was not charged for the act after a judge ruled him unable to stand trial due to a psychological disorder.

There are about 340,000 Muslims in Switzerland, which has a population of 7.4 million. Forty-three percent of the Muslim minority are of Turkish origin. Islam is the second religion in the country after Christianity.

Here's something that has to be said about muslims. I wonder, had it been a worship center of any other faith, would the guy still have been disabled by the worshipers.

yea i was thinking the same thing...though it's surprising that he wasn't beaten up at all for trying to kill those people.

My Mosque has cops out front, so I doubt anyone would try to start something with us.

Why on earth do you consider such action to be limited to Muslims?

Well maybe if the guy went into a Sikh temple the outcome might've been the same. But I just can't picture the same thing happening in a Church or a Synagogue or a Bahai or Budhist or Hindu Temple.

awesome to hear about the bravery of the people in the mosque, but the rest of the story is pretty messed up. Europe needs to get it together

Well, I guess all countries as well.

There is seriously a problem if my Mosque needs to have cops out front for protection. Churches don't have that or anything.
