Dozens detained after Egypt sectarian clashes

Sat Oct 27, 3:30 PM ET

Police put 37 people behind bars on Saturday after violent clashes a day earlier between Muslims and Christians in southern Egypt, a judicial source told AFP.

"They will be held in custody for four days pending investigation," the source said.

Fighting broke out on Friday after midday prayers in Minya province, 225 kilometres (140 miles) south of Cairo, following rumours that a church was planning to annex an adjoining piece of land.

Angry Muslims started fires on a piece of land owned by a Christian which led to clashes where both sides hurled stones and bottles at one another. At least 12 people injured during the fighting, a security source said.

Authorities refused to say how many Christians and Muslims were detained, giving just a global figure, in order to avoid inciting more tension.

Members of Egypt's Coptic Church are estimated to form six to 10 percent of the 76 million population and are the largest Christian community in the Middle East.

Its not the fault of muslims, its just a few muslims who get mad when a new church gets built or an existing church makes plans to expand. Most muslims in Egypt couldnt care less. But its useful to some people to use that anger to develop an us-vs-them mentality

As far as I'm concerned there shouldnt be any restriction on church building in Egypt

Churches cant take land from people in Egypt. I doubt that this church was going to steal somebody's land against their will, Egypt has very strict and detailed laws about land ownership. What this is about is land owned by christians that is donated to churches to help them expand or used for the development of new churches.

Basically in Egypt theres a law that new churches cant be built and old churches cant be expanded without a Presidential order. I dont know why this law still exists, its an unfair law because Muslim Egyptians dont have to go through that kind of stuff to build mosques. Actually the number of mosques in major Egyptian cities has increased dramatically while Church building is rarely approved. Anyway, even though that discrimination is there, its not enough for some people. Even when churches go through the legal maneuvers, there is often a backlash against them for expanding or for being built. Its a small group of people, whipped up by an even smaller group of people with evil intentions for Egypt. But its having a very serious and dangerous effect on our country

Bad publicity for Egypt, especially with the Free Kareem rallies that are going to be held soon in major cities around the world.

Strange why some Muslims feel threatened by the building of new churches. They're Houses of Worship anyway, so what's the problem?

Insecurity.

Given the fact that Copts in Egypt are treated worse than Muslims in india, it is safe to say that it is the fault of a few intolerant Muslims who want to eliminate Copts from Egypt.
