He attends a Jewish seder and now this. This is good. Obama may be the first President who is going out of his way to show respect to people of other religions.

I await the videos of reactions from Fox News commentators. They should be pretty funny.

I don't think we should say this. remember that all the previous presidents used to give lip service on Ramadan but you could tell that the substance was deliberately delivered in such a way that it was designed to be useless. Obama's speeches to Muslims have been different, and that in itself is an action--not just words. It is stuff like this that builds bridges and promotes mutual respect and harmony. Think about how many non-Muslims will listen to this speech and how their hearts will be softened if just a bit towards Islam. That is a huge thing.

I'm not following. How have Obama's speeches to Muslims been different "as an action". Sure he can use his charm to come off as being more sincere, but why should we treat him different than the previous presidents. I mean this is the same Obama that was pushing harder for drone attacks in Pakistan than the Republicans were during his campaign. Even Bush temporarily halted air strikes in Ramadan and praised the month, why is Obama any different?

I am opposed to the drone attacks as well as the war in Afghanistan. However, I can at least begin to understand Obama's view that they need to get the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. I actually think in his mind that is the end goal.

That is different than Bush who was on a religious crusade and using lame excuses to invade Iraq.

And the reason I call his speeches like this an "act" is because it is an act in the sense of a gesture of good will, which goes a long way.

Yeah, I've called him a rock star. There's no getting away from him. But the efforts he seems to be undertaking to educate Americans about religion are badly needed. I'm glad he's willing to partake in religious traditions and ceremonies because it tells the country that it doesn't matter what you believe, you're still an American and therefore welcome to practice your customs in this country, and it tells Americans that he is against religious bigotry of all forms.
