Default Healthcare reform

Has anyone actually read what the Government want to do or what?

Seems to em most are just listening to those who yell the loudest.

From what i can gather the Administration don;t want to instill a government ran Healthcare system. They want to reform whats already in p,lace and make it easier for the uninsured to get a consistent level of care.

Whats wrong with that?

Discuss both sides

i know a lot of people are against it because its still not single-payer. i think its a step in the right direction. if there's so much noise about something as simple as this, there's no way we can jump straight into a single-payer system without like... a civil war?

p.s. i fixed the title for you.

cost cutting should be the priority since thats where the main problems of the US healthcare system lie, plus most people agree on the basics of how to help contain costs. everybody gets caught up on the question of single payer just like abortion and all those other hot button issues. I think part of that is a republican tactic

I agree with you. The whole idea of reform should focused on cost cutting in a positive way that doesn't allow the level of care to suffer. Insurance companies should be encouraged to make plans cost effective to those who can't afford health insurance.

I haven't been insured for 3 years because my job is weird like that. I earned too much to qualify for Medicaid but couldn't afford a monthly plan through an insurance company. People like me who fall into a grey area (about 40 million or so of us) need ot be covered, i'm not saying the Government need to intervene but maybe something like subsidies for companies who provide low cost options?

Why would you prefer a single-payer system over the public option?

That documentary portrays a biased view of the US healthcare system. The British system worked well for me.

I don't think "a lot of people" are against it because it is single-payer. The people who want a single-payer system are even more on the left, and would thus not at all be "against" the public option, which as you rightly mentioned, would be a "step in that direction."

Rather, many people are against the healthcare reform because they erroneously think it is a single-payer system that Obama wants.

Single-payer system = death of medicine in America
Public option = sounds good to me

I tend to think most people don't understand the difference between single payer and the public option.

i meant i know a lot of super-lefties don't support it because its not single payer. some find a public option as a step in the right direction and therefore support it. others find it not good enough even with the public option so don't support it.

bro, single payer and public option are the same thing, one is just a 'lite' version of the other. If the government becomes a cheap insurer that people can opt into then employers will stop offering health coverage to their employees and everybody will end up in the public option.

No, it's not the same thing. Yes, it might lead to that, but it is not that. And there are many deterrents that the government can put in place to prevent a mass migration by employers, and also if it gets that bad that the insurance companies go under, then we can reevaluate the situation and tweek itself to level the playing field. Why the gloom and doom? Why not try it and see how it goes? If it fails miserably, then we can change it up.

cuz i dont think its possible to backtrack out of it if the system really does fail. We would just have to get used to it and make the best of it and learn to live with it the way Euros do

Although, in the end, something like this might be the only way to cover everybody and that has to be an important goal.
