I don't mind talking to anyone in person, and I greatly prefer it to phone calls.
When it's something specific over the phone, I tend to forget what I'm calling about very quickly and stumble over my words until I remember what it is. Then all I can think about is how stupid I sound the whole time, so I clam up and only give one or two word responses. If the call lasts long enough, I'll realize I'm clamming up and talk way too much to get myself out of it.
If it's not about something specific, like a friendly call or whatever, I run out of things to say almost immediately and just sit there silent.
Regardless, it's all very awkward. I wouldn't call it a fear as much as it's just a desire to avoid embarassment.
