It disturbs me that they offered an elderly man sweets, out of all the other healthier options that were available. They could have offered him several healthier alternatives; are these people not aware of the current diabetic and visceral fat problem that is plaguing that region of the world. I mean they might as well have offered him cigarettes

He doesn't need a fridge for sweets. He could just put them in the cupboard. However, I am totally digging his enviromentally sound stance on not creating unnnecessary waste. Props to the shaykh.

You have a somewhat valid contention. There are imaams who have nice full-time jobs (apart from being imams) but they still ask for a couple thousand bucks per speech plus first class flights, etc. I can understand where you're coming from with that regard. However, at the same time, imaams who don't have other jobs, this is their means of living. They have families to take care of, and they aren't on a retirement plan or anything, so when large organizations (who have the money to give) invite these imaams to teach a class or give speeches, they have a right to ask for a decent amount.
With that being said, I'd like to point out that the norm isn't that of imaams asking for a few thousand bucks, first class flights, a suite, etc, but rather the norm is of imaams who don't really take money from MSAs (since they usually don't have money to give) and imaams who aren't looking to buy a BMW by teaching a class or two.
This is their career paths, learning and teaching us, and they deserve to get paid just as much, if not more, than college professors, engineers, etc.
