"Poly-phasic" sleep is the medical term.
"Uberman sleep schedule" is the slang term; it literally means "Superman's sleep schedule"
Most people have REM sleep only about 20 - 25% of the time they're asleep i.e about 1.5 to 2 hrs total in an average 6 to 8 hr sleeping period. The rest of the time is spent in non-REM phases of the sleep cycle. When you commit to a polyphasic sleep schedule, you're gunning for the REM phase only.
It involves forcefully breaking your current sleep schedule into how you want to do your minimum sleep schedule. It takes most people about two weeks to break their schedule if they're on it everyday. It took me about a week to do for the 4/20 schedule - I never did the 2/22.
Most people break it up into six 20-minute naps throughout the day ... one every four hours. That way you can even be on this schedule during class, work, whatever.
Essentially what you're doing is stripping away non-REM sleep and forcing your brain to do REM sleep only, and immediately. Once you've broken yourself into the proper schedule - its freaky .... you go to sleep literally right as soon as your head hits the pillow, straight into deep, lucid REM sleep and then snap ... you wake up 20 minutes later.

In the second link the guy talks about those who are on this sleep schedule having really massive food cravings, I don't know why that is but I know it happened to me - for some reason I started drinking various fruit juices a HELLA LOT.

Assalam 'Alaykum,
Omg, I love napping and sleeping.
But usually my naps turn into sleep.

i've heard though (maybe even read) that all that non-REM sleep is just as important if not more important for your every day recovery, like for muscles and stuff, and cutting that out of your life just can't be good for you.

its not, thats why doctors only reccomend doing it for 6 months at the most. Its usually done by Navy SEALS and SAS type people..

Really? Where from? Most people I've talked to have said that there is no discernible need for NREM sleep, because your body can get physical rest even while its awake.
The only word of caution that has always gone around is that since God made it that way, NREM sleep probably does have a purpose, so eventually you go back to a regular sleep cycle.

Hm, same for me. The 2 years I spent for my college pre-req, I was up at 4am and in bed by 10pm. If I took more than a 20 minute nap, I was cranky, more tired than before etc.
