Englad has different definitions of "friends"
Friends are like family

I had 5 female friends like that, that developed a crush on me. 2 of them became heartbroken one of whom really shocked me but in hindsight I could see the seeds of it being sown.
That's all in the past but now, as a rule, I put up many invisible barriers to keep any relationship with a non-mehram woman to that which is necessary only.
I would recommend everyone to listen to the story of Imam Basira. Your situation might be different but it illustrates how shaytan leads a person to a sin one would think impossible of oneself.
In another sense, running a red light is punishable and the wisdom is that it's dangerous. But if you run it at 4am when there is no danger the law will still lay the smackdown on you.

yeah..someone ends up thinking since the other person's so great as a friend, they'll be great as more.
I like married mormon men. they're so decent and respectable.

Well I disagree wholeheartedly. I give people more credit than this. I don't think any things impossible my friend I do how ever think certain things are very unlikley.
Each of us are different and each fo us see things in very different lights. I'm not trying to be a douche but you don't know me nor do you know my friends, nor the situation so it might be very different from what happend with you.
Allah knows best.

it's possible, of course. but you should realize that this isn't the case among the majority of people with friends of the opposite sex.

Really? Wow. Most of my male friends have female friends, they all seem to get along great without developing crushes or hopping into bed with each other. Why do people think that as soon as you have a friend of the opposite sex then it will lead to the bedroom?

Yeah, I don't think being friends is that big of a deal - people just make it into one and/or can't handle it. Of course you can't be stupid about it, but there's no reason to cut off contact or anything.

no dude. those things are off limits to girly chicks. we rely on male friends for our sports news, and pretend to be disgusted. the only sports girls are allowed to read up on are figure skating, gymnastics, and possibly tennis. duh.
