We would like to take a moment to inform you that "dear" is considered the proper and formal salutation for a letter.
We do, however, ecourage you to become irritated with anyone who closes their letter with "love always and lots of muaaaaaahs!!!!!!!!!" This is not the proper closing for a letter and is indeed rather disturbing.
