Default Islam v Culture

Does is not annoy you... especially us Asians when although our parents teach us about islam....they throw alot of that back home tradition that contradicts Islam!!!

i know my parents did and still do!!! and even if you try and explain that it aint right they will argue and argue just to prove their points!!! usually its so lame without no proofs!!!
All we have to do is look at our prophet SAW he was and is the living (in our hearts) and walking Quran.. (representation of Islam).......the logical things seem so hard to see WHY???? why wont they understand!!!

and then they would say what would u know your still young!!! and alot of elders well in my experience believe that what we youngtsers (practising ones) know about islam is somehow is too modern but really were just open minded!!!

some issues... Nationalism!!! marrying only from your sect and your village back home!!!
Too many high expectations in a potential partner in terms of materialism money, education, property, looks, but not deen!!!
and also issues with divorced women!! women have it so hard in the community!!! its not so bad if its a man who is divorced!!! woman cant be educated etc etc, we are still being knocked back and belittled!!

anyone else wana rant about some other cultural issues???

Its not just asians, its a problem for muslims everywhere...

Especially in the west where culture is extremely superficial....

People always justify Haram with 'oh its culture'

Especially when it comes to holidays outside of Eid...

Why are you publicising your parents faults on a public forum for strangers to see. Have some class.

Because it's a random forum, filled with strangers using pseudo names in order to conceal their real identities, where it is possible to discuss everything from homosexuality to musharraf. (no intentional connection here).

aroma: you're right, parents can mix up islam and culture and they can be very set in their ways. you just learn to take the good and leave the bad.

Indeed it is unfortunate. I also find it disturbing when kids go around telling you what they think is haram and halal

the trick is to know the deen to be able to differentiate between what is culture and religion.

culture is society's way of imposing traditions. it is not reasonable. Allah is.

I should have been on CNN and broadcasting this maybe then can it be called publicising!!!

oops my fault!!! i shouldnt have said MY PARENTS i should have GENERALISED IT... its a common thing that many young people feel and its not only MY PARENTS!!! it happens quite alot and in many societies!!!! I THOUGHT this was GENERAL RAMBLINGS THREAD!!!

Alhamdulliah.. my parents let me study..work..go out..see friends..im not of those that would be forced to marry back home..if i wanted to marry a non asian muslim my parents would maybe be reluctant at 1st but would agree to it!!! im not just talkin about my experiences but as a whole it affects many people!!

SEE the reason why people come on these kinda sites is to express their concerns ideas.etc.... if everything was TABOO then people wouldnt know wat really goes on in the world!! WOULD THEY HEY!!
i guess ur too afraid to give ur views!! obvioulsy u dont go through all that!!

"have some Class" thats very classy of you to class others!!!

it really depends wat the subject is about... sometimes parents do believe the truth and wat is right but are swayed by wat others will think!!!
