someone mentioned refrigerating them before cutting, but what also helps is lighting a candle and placing it near you. it helps me.

what i do is i always keep a few onions in the fridge at all times. that usually works really well, just pull them out, peel, and start chopping, no tears.
also, i notice if i'm wearing my contacts, then no matter what, there's no tearing up. but if i'm not and i'm cutting non-fridgerated onions... ouuuuch.

Re: The Art of Cooking
I've never tried chewing gum but all those other methods of avoiding burning/teary onion eyes don't work with me for some reason. The only thing that works is if I chop a little at a time and leave for a few minutes and do something else, come back and chop more (for bigger onions). For a small onion I try to cut it really fast and look away often.

Re: The Art of Cooking
yeah i think contacts block the onion fumes or something. ive never teared up while wearing them either.

Re: The Art of Cooking
Thanks Spice and everyone else . If what you say works, I'll positive rep you; otherwise, expect a big neg. Jk. Thanks though, I will try it out soon enough.
Zzze, you said something about sunglasses. I've worn my reading glasses and its done nothing.
Vanilla I don't chew gum, but I guess I should start at least when cutting onions .
Fatima, I don't have contacts, but now I wish I did .

Re: The Art of Cooking
contacts or no contacts does nothing for me. Burns worse with contacts for me which makes sense because the burning and watery eyes from onions actually come from inhaling the smell of the onion, it has nothing to do with your eyes.

there's no magical method to avoid tears that works across the board; everyone's different, as is every onion, eyeball, etc.
one surefire way to reduce tears while chopping onions is to do it fast. : )
