I think caviar's revolting.

when I eat fish, I try to avoid the fishiness. why would I eat something fishy just because its expensive?

Sandwiches all the way

Mine have -

Bagel or sunflower seed bread
Cheese (mozzarella for me)
red peppers
sprouts
cucumber

(and I use spicy flesh of swine salami, but I'm sure it's easy to come up with a spicy alternative )

anyway, i drove to the northern neck of virginia yesterday with my little brothers for fun; we were on the lookout for a crab shack. we didnt find one open (day after christmas in rural VA, go figure), but we did find a small cute seafood shack open with fresh stuff right from the bay. we got their last half dozen of steamed she-crabs and a dozen oysters for a price i would never find around here. score one for the bay area of va thankfully i've eatened crabs before, so i knew that you basically just tear into it. surprisingly, the brother (they're 11 year old twins) who is squeamish about raw shrimp had less of a problem hacking away at these crabs than the brother who was so enthusiastic about going to a crab shack in the first place!

if you islamican foodies are even remotely "adventurous" and arent too strict on the hanafi madhab () i highly suggest stopping in at a crab shack when you get a chance. seafood is always a bit pricey, but worth it. you can order a big platter of steamed crabs; they'll sit you down at a classy table covered in brown paper, hand you a mallet and maybe some bibs/napkins, your crabs, and a bowl of melted butter and old bay seasoning, and you just take it from there. i can't really explain how to eat a crab on here because it's very...messy...but if you look it up or something before going, or just ask advice from the people who work there, you'll be just fine. and crabs are a year-round fare, so no worries about season (they're better in non summer months).

i also have a dozen oysters that i dunno what to do with. i mean i know what to do with them, but i'm not exactly sure what i plan on using to open them. probably an old dull knife and a lot of caution. i'll report back.
ewwwww raw fish!

this would be a good meal for the starving students thread, but since that doesn't exist anymore, this thread will have to do. the fact that I can make this tells you it is a recipe that is pretty hard to screw up:

Quick Black Bean Soup Recipe :: Green Living at Care2

I made this after trying and liking panera's soup, but this one came out better. there is too much water in there though and it takes forever to boil and get thick. I ended up removing some of the unmashed beans for a while so they wouldn't get mushy as I waited for the soup to finally thicken. otherwise, quick, simple, and let's you eat for 2-3 days (if you're like me and can eat the same thing for 2-3 days )

Cool Garlic Sauce

i'm gonna experiment with some garlic sauce recipes starting with this:
Lebanes Garlic Dip/sauce Aka Toom Recipe at Epicurious.com

my mom makes shawarma at home and it tastes almost like the one in restaurants except for the darned sauce. the secret is 'shawarma spice' you can get it at your local arab store. im pretty sure it is labeled ''shawarma spice' just throw that on your shredded chicken.
