What's wrong with Shaan boxes? I thought everyone uses those.
It's either Qudsia or Foozball who thinks they are the sign of the end of times. I think Qudsia.

listen, people can hate on shaan all they want but when you've got a job and/or school, a husband and a baby or two plus even maybe an inlaw or two living with you, you'll be feeling awfully lame for judging so fast. there's a reason why people have servants in pakistan!

Asalamu Alaikum,

My mom never used it, so I'm not used to the Shaan masala taste. But yeah, plenty of people use it and its cool..........people shouldn't be embarrassed to say they use it. As long as its spic-ay.

what's your favourite shaam masala? mine is the malay chicken biryani, lahori fish and achar ghost.

i always add more spices to the mix anyways, so im only half-cheating.

actually, shaan masala doesnt help you cut your cooking time, so that argument is not really a legit one. it's just the flavor...so like, if you don't know how to cook, sure, it works. but don't think it makes the process any faster..cause it doesn't. so really, it doesn't matter how much you have to juggle.

also. i have a lot to juggle. and i still cook sans shaan masala.

also, people in the subcontinent have servants because it's a remnant of colonial culture.

Hmm I think it does. I've made Dahi Barey with the Shan packet and compared to how my mom makes them from scratch - this was a breeze.

the mughals didn't hire servants cause they didn't have time to cook.

I agree. We're not talking about dahi barey spice mix but the actual lentil that comes in powder form. So it does make it faster when compared to scratch.

Default to those whining about time and how you evidently have none of it.

aright well i imagine most folks don't have dahi barey on a regular basis, or that it doesn't substitute dinner. also, the 'ground lentils' ...also known as 'besan' can be bought from any desi store - it's the same thing. and it's a pretty common thing. i don't know of any desi household that doesn't have a big thing of besan lying around in the kitchen. so really, again, it's only the spices that shaan is good for.

and for dinner, generally, it's some form of meat or vegetables - and shaan masala sure as hell doesn't come with meat and veges in it. so like, if you're saying you use frozen vegetables or meals in a bag, ya sure it's quick. and that's cool if that's your thing.

but honestly, no need to get all defensive about it. for some people, the process of preparing a meal and being aware of what goes in it is just as important as the meal itself. please stop vilifying those who hold that view. and no need to get on a high horse about how the only reason you don't cook from scratch is because you don't have time - no one does. if you can post regularly on islamica, you sure as heck have time to cook a proper meal. if you don't WANT to, that's great do what works for you. but don't get all uppity about it when someone says they like and prefer and chose to be purists when they cook.

geez. just can't win. some wanna bite your head off for being career-academic oriented, others want to bite your head off for actually taking the time (that i also don't have like everyone else) to actually think through and prepare meals from scratch.
