some food from the bridal shower...

1) fruit w/ chocolate dip
2) hummus
3) punch
4) chips and dip
5) all the food.. we had a chocolate espresso ganache something something cake, chicken wings, plain and honey bbq, pita bread to go w/ the hummus and also the white cream rolls on the left which were to die for. they weren't like any cream rolls I've ever tasted, def not the cheap kinds you get in grocery store bakeries. this Ukrainian girl brought them. really nice of her because it wasn't even a potluck. i can't wait to get the recipe. i'll post it here iA

You know... I'd like to be able to help... but I can't. I too am in search of a low sodium diet. I just decided one day to see how difficult it was to keep my sodium under the recommended daily intake, and it turns out it's damn near impossible, unless all you eat is salad. (without salad dressing). I don't even need to watch my sodium, but it's become this personal vendetta against widely available food I have.

If I find any good website with recipes I'll be sure to put them up.

That sucks. There are healthy cookbooks out there. I always see them in the stores.
You should pick up one or two.

Share any good low-fat recipes with us.

I love the about.com site for cooking.

Red face thanksgiving soup

So I'll be stepping back into the kitchen tomorrow and trying out a new recipe- cream of wild mushroom soup. I found portobello and cremini mushrooms but the store was out of shiitake so I bought white button ones. I've never cooked any mushrooms before so not sure how it'll taste. I've heard portobellos are really good. Can mushrooms be washed? I've heard it's better to wipe them with a damp towel. And should the stems be cut off??

and if I have time I'll make rosebud cookies.

if they're really dirty, i'd wash 'em (even if it risks them coming out a little more rubbery). stems can be...stemmy. but stemmy's not necessarily bad; if you prefer an evenly chewable piece of mushroom, then you should cut off the stems. what are rosebud cookies?

omg you guys- i made thanksgiving dinner (a day early, yes) and it was pretty good every year our thanksgiving table gets progressively more american- this year there was absolutely not bangali food on the table (gasp!). i did the usual- pumpkin pie, stuffing (with real bread, which was great), turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and biscuits. i also did 2 extra chickens because the biggest halal turkey i could find was only 13 pounds, and i was feeding 30+ people and, here comes the doh moment, i made my pies yesterday, but i didnt start cooking until 3pm today. baaad move. it ended with me making gravy with about 5 guests hovering over my shoulder asking if i needed help, and a counter full of messiness while guests were arriving.

speaking of hovering guests, i think i am totally my mother's daughter when it comes to kitchen space. if there's another person in the kitchen and they get in my way, i'm always tempted to ask them to just leave (politely, of course); the problem is that they never do! the kitchen in our house is an open one, so it has doorways leading to the den, living room, and dining room and it is absolutely aggravating when guests decide to congregate in just that area while im trying to finish something up. of course, it is my fault for being the bad hostess who is standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. anybody else get territorial over their workspace?

hijabi I can't believe you cooked all that considering you started at 3. props.

I have a similar kitchen- open archways to other rooms, but our dining table is in the kitchen. If a guest (well, if it's my friends, not an auntie) is hanging around the kitchen I get them to help me finish cooking.

So today my mother roasted half a turkey breast (or Tandoori Turkey as she called it, fully masala-ed up of course) which was enough for 5-6 people, skillet potatoes, and wild rice. I got a pumpkin pie from Whole Foods and I warmed it in the toaster oven with a marshmallow on top. Yum.

I made Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup from Barefoot Contessa, it wasn't bad but way too rich. And kinda bland even though I added some cayenne. If I made it again I'd add 2 minced garlic cloves, dashes of tabasco instead of cayenne, and leave out the half and half. Chicken stock would have more flavor than the mushroom stock. Also I couldn't find shiitake mushrooms so just used white button in place of them. Mushrooms are cute and fun to chop but kinda tasteless. If you're a mushroom lover you would probably like it, but I wouldn't make it again.

making the mushroom stock and sauteing the leeks:

browning the mushrooms (I added the carrots from the stock back in):

here's the recipe: Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup Recipe: Recipes: Food Network

assalamu alaykui

mm i love soups.

Today I made a quik style tajeen ish - in a frying pan. Potatoes, bell pepper, aubergine and courgette and chopped tomoatoes (with all the usual spices- cumin, coriander, chilli peppers, all spice, salt, pepper) and some lemon

it was fun. But i think i made it too spicy.

I love soup too and I had cream of mushroom today. Yum. Mushrooms are not tasteless; they're awesome. And very cute.

Vat means tajeen?

i <3 thanksgiving.

yesterday, i made carrot cake, sweet potato pie and mashed potatoes (and salad, but i don't think that really counts). my mom took care of the turkey, gravy, thai chicken & rice, string beans, and crust-less quiche. my sis made the cranberry sauce and helped my mom with the croissants.

all from scratch alh. the carrot cake was DELICIOUS, alhumdulillah; it's currently my profile pic on fb.
