Is cycling equal to doing a full body work out using Cardio and Weights?

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
I wouldn't say so. Cycling doesn't require much upper body involvement.
If you put your body in a catabolic state (i.e. burning off more calories than eating), you are bound to lose some muscle. It may be minimized with exercise, but it will still happen.

Hmmm Looks like Ramadhan will be a slow month for working out. I ahte eating so much in such a short amoutn of time. I generally eat light but fasting messes me up and i get really sick.

It doesn't over do it but gives a lovely even tone throughout. Just enough muscle and just enough cardio donchaknow.

How do you maintain tone on your upperbody?

When biking the workout I get keeps my upperbody pretty toned. My arm is as muscular as it's ever been between the elbow and wrist. I sometimes do pushups now and then. I look like an out of shape Muhammad Ali when he was younger in his 20s

How do you know this? Did you have body testing done before and after? It is hard to keep up a fitness regimen during Ramadan so I try to adjust my expectations. I usually do cardio right before it's time to break my fast so then I can drink something. If I can't do that due to scheduling, I try to do a light workout afterwards, but it is hard and I don't work out as much as I do the rest of the year.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
ok..i was on the runners world forums, and i made a thread about muslims and fasting and running etc...and like a lot of these trainers or whatever were talking about how they train muslim clients/athletes during ramadan and its hard but possible etc..and usually its better after u break ur fast
but anyway this muslim chick in high school was like, i hydrate myself insanely from when i break my fast until the end of suhoor time, then while im fasting i run 6 miles every other day cuz shes on her schools cross country team
i was like WTF there are people like that wow. i could never...maybe one day. i can only hope.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
I'm gonna fast for a day (I've been convinced)... I don't know when I'm gonna do it, but since I started working out again, I think my metabolism got cranked higher. I can mow through a whole special combo at Sushi Home, and it's just like a speed bump for my belly (usually it fills me up).
So I don't know how I'll pull this one off. I can't imagine how you do it for a month.

Well I can only speak from experience of course. I'm not a fitness nut so I don't bother counting the calories of what I eat and drag myself out of bed cause I have to get in those extra miles etc. I've just fallen into the addiction that is called cycling and do it for pure enjoyment. All I know is the more I bike, the better I feel. During ramadan I don't think I'd survive driving every day. If I lose muscle tone, I don't really notice the difference.

It's easy. The first few days are the hardest but afterwards it's routine, then it's very easy. The fact that almost every Muslim does it makes it actually easier. Plus there are usually community breaking of the fasts and there's that moral support.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
sal -- did they post exercise tips for ramadan, aside from working out after you break you fast?
the time between maghrib and isha is like an hour and a half (let's say 2 hours, max). that's like... a 20-30 min work out before having to shower and head to taraweeh. and i don't think that's even counting eating time? sigh.

if i remember correctly a lot of those people recommended working out before eating suhoor..which is a crazy hour but they said its probably best then
or an hour after breaking your fast or whenever you feel like the foods been digested
and also its important to break your fast slowly..break it with a glass of water with lemon juice and honey, and eat maybe one date and then wait like 20 mins before you eat more.
and yeah i dont really know what my ramadan schedule is gonna be like..school, fasting, working out..ahh
