Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Yesterday I was fighing heavy wind. When ever I stood on the pedals and got off my saddle, I was almost bowled over backwards. Alhamdulillah I managed to keep the rubber side down though

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Phd: I had a very similar issue recently. You need to take it easy. Maybe do no-impact things like ride a recumbent bike or the elliptical at a lower incline. I wouldn't do ANYTHING which causes you even the slightest twinge. A burst cyst is NO FUN. Honestly, you can't gain so much weight in three weeks anyway - just be careful with your diet.
Yeah, this isn't my first time with a cyst. I had one when I was younger and I remember falling to the kitchen floor just bawling from the pain. It was about a week worth of pain until I couldn't take it anymore and ended up in the ER, where they gave me medicine.
The cyst wasn't as big as it is now. There's only two things I'm really nervous about- gaining weight [I gain extremely fast] and scarring if I need surgery. Other than that, I'm pretty oki. I have so many other things to stress over, eh? I might begin to stress if I have to go for surgery and it's discovered that it's a cancerous cyst.
But thanks, I'll try hitting the treadmill...when moms not around.

Shadha: that sounds scary, I hope all goes well inshallah and that you feel better
----
I have been a big fat lazoid lately. I've been in Chicago where there is no gym and no place to really run or exercise (I hate running outside anyway). Now I'm back at my parents' house alh. My sister has a gym membership and they allow her to bring a guest! I'm so excited to start working out AGAIN and once I go back to school this Friday the campus gym should be open again too.
I have a question! Does anyone know anything about Slimquick drink mix? They have some really funny commercials out that really get one's attention but I am skeptical about trying any type of weight loss supplements. I tried googling dangers and side effects but couldn't find much. This is their homepage Home

most over the counter weight loss products wont help you lose anything but cash in your pocket. i dont know what's in that one exactly, but i'd guess green tea or something like that. the ingredients in over the counter products like that have not been tested and proven to do anything at all for weight loss. and the studies that have been done do not show promising results. (except for Alli, which is a lower strength of a prescription medication) but yeah, dont waste your money, and i bet it tastes nasty too.

I just looked around their site and besides the attention grabbing commercials, Slimquick doesn't seem like anything special. Besides that i'm also really afraid of putting odd and unknown stuff into my body. Who knows the long term effects..
I also looked up the couch to 5k program and am thinking of starting it. It looks like it should be doable for me inshallah.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Alright, back in action....
I'm here to talk about cardio again - (I know everyone helps me out all the time with it... humor me a'ight!)
I'm basically doing something like this - a cycle of three days, two days low-impact and one day running. Low impact is stair climber (which I'm feeling is doing almost nothing for me) and recumbent bike. Running on treadmill.
I've started using the pre-set programs - I've been trying the 'hill plus' and 'random' settings, and they seem to be working out alright. It keeps me in a sweat. I usually do it for 15 minutes plus warm up/cool down.
I'm curious about the heart rate thing though... I'm 28, and the girl who did my fitness profile said that I should target my heart rate for 154ish. But what if I do kick it up to 160+? She said it won't have an appreciably bigger impact but I'm finding the mid 150's still in my comfort zone.
Anyway, I'm open to all kinds of advice regarding cardio - hit me with it if you've got it.
Other than that - core strength. I currently do weighted sit ups, crunches, bridges... but I wanna do more than just abs. Any advice on the wobble boards? Or free weights involving exercise balls? I used to eye them with suspicion, but I've been seeing some impressive things with them.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
i dont follow the maximum heart rate chart at all, it's warped for me..and i think it's the case for most people. after all, it is an approximation...
just do whatever feels a bit beyond your comfort level. just sweating is not enough. the talk test is a better indicator of where you're at. you wanna be the GOOD uncomfortable.
if you feel like the stair climber isnt doing anything for you then increase resistance, speed, whatever it takes
dont increase running mileage too fast, i did and im suffering for it in terms of being patient now cuz i hurt myself. not worth it
google exercises on the ball for your abs..there's lots of stuff you can add.
anyways you just have to be patient with building your cardiac fitness..and consistent. most important thing is consistency. its esp challenging with running

I'm starting to feel really good when I bike home despite the wind that fights me all the way during the first 10 miles

Variable, I agree with this. What you're doing sounds fine, but you need to make it a habit first before you start going all crazy. If your low-impact days aren't doing much for you, try doing intervals where you go super-fast for a minute and recover for a minute (or do them with resistance). That will help keep you from getting bored too.
