Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Did cardio and weights today, approximately 45 mins. I wanted to do a little more cardio, but I hadn't eaten anything for like 5 hours when I began my workout. So, yeah, next time I'll make sure not to go hungry for that long.

If I want to lose weight fast (about 5 - 7 lbs) do I need to up the amount of exercise?

you can rule out the yoga in terms of caloric expenditure..it's not doing anything weight loss related. just toning and helping with flexibility and endurance etc.
same for the crunches and lunges...they only do a little. it's basically like the cherry on top..you dont really need it but it's nice.
so youre left with just the elliptical..and 3 times a week for 20 mins isnt enough..shoudl be at least 30 minutes 5 times a week for the amt of weight youre looking to lose, along with some light weights beforehand.
as a general rule the lesser weight you have to lose or the closer you are to your goal weight, the longer it takes to get rid of the extra. it's kind of like, you're already semi fit, it doesnt take a lot for you to start gasping for breath. so you have to push yourself really hard outside of your comfort zone to get the results youre looking for
but it's not like impossible by ANY means..a little pushing out of your zone will get you far.
i recommend a book called 28 day body shapeover

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
I just walked 4 miles on the treadmill. I've been good these past 1.5 weeks. I've worked out almost every day.

ahhh that stinks. I am looking for toning too but weight loss is the main thing so yea I guess I need to up the amount. I did about 15 minutes on the elliptical and 10 on the treadmill plus weights and lunges today. Plus I walked to class and tried to speed walk (as much as that's possible with a 20 lb backpack ). I guess tomorrow morning after yoga I wont be bumming around in the hallway for 40 minutes before class like I usually do, I'll be working out. I hate working out, ugh. But I MUST LOSE WEIGHT!
P.S. thanks for the advice sally

4miles? Damn. How long did it take you and at what speed? And what the hell did you do to not get bored??
I just started doing 30mins on the treadmill. I get bored so quickly, but I found this option where it changes up the incline. I also have my cellphone with me, texting helps pass the time. I'm hoping next week to go up to 45mins and basically each week add 15mins.
I want to hit up a boxing gym.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Question for the * Married Sisters*: how does your husband feel about you working out? How does he feel about you loosing weight? You gaining muscles? Do you find that he's completely encouraging? Trains with you? Cooks/buys healthy food for you both? Is motivated by you? Or does he encourage you to a point? Does he say, "you look fine the way you are, why change?" sort of things? Or is he completely put off by you loosing weight and/or gaining muscle? Becoming resentful and sabotages?
I ask this of the married sisters because as husbands, they are closer to the bodies of their wives than a fiance would be.

He tells me it's good to be healthy so he's happy I work out (so does he) but when I complain to the mirror that I'm fat he says, 'you're fine the way you are' . I have a feeling he might be afraid to some extent that I'll go back to how I was in the days when I was craaaaaazy about working out...I was a freaking stick figure and he hated that .

The husband is quite supportive of my whole weight loss/get healthy venture, although he will break out into a rant at least once a week about how american women are obsessed with their bodies and that he loves me just the way that I am and that I should stop reading fitness magazines and obsessing about working out so much. whew, run on sentence, but it really is a run on rant.
Things the husband does/doesn't do:
*Doesn't complain (too much) about driving 20 miles round trip to a women's only gym so I can take dance classes without men peeking in
*Doesn't complain (too much) when I go running a few times a week
*Doesn't complain (too much) when I made us become quasi vegetarians, aka meat only twice a week.
*Strongly discourages meals with pasta and rice
*Humors me when I flex my arms and say, look, look, I see a muscle!
*Will occasionally run a 5k with me and blow me out of the water with no training
*Will insist that crunches and "stomach exercises" are the best way to lose weight, despite all the evidence I bring to the contrary
*Doesn't understand why I must buy $80 shoes twice a year, and what is wrong with running in a cotton long sleeve tshirt
I think that he's understanding because of the way I presented it. I've never been thin, but after I quit figure skating in high school, I slowly started to put on weight. It got to the point where it affected my breathing (asthma), my heart (high blood pressure) and just about every other part of my physical well being. I needed to change how I ate and my exercise commitment so that I could live a healthy life.
He also does much better when I'm not obsessing about eating and exercising. I tend to have an obsessive personality, finding something and fixating on it for a few months before moving on to something else. I do this with exercise and eating too. So, I make a concious effort to make it just a normal part of our lives, and not THE MOST IMPORTANT thing ever.

It's cute when he volunteers to come along, not so cute when he beats me
I'd highly advise all sisters who are active to talk things over with their potential husbands before hand and get any agreements in writing. Some guys may not like it that their wives go out and run or bike for all the world to see, even if they knew about it before hand.
