Re: Health and Fitness Thread
question! since Ramadan is right around the corner......
how do you guys plan to exercise during Ramadan? I find it especially hard, because I tend to dehydrate very easily…I need my H20
So I am thinking maybe start power walking regularly…or maybe start yoga?
An obvious option is to work out after iftar…but then its cutting close to taraweeh time.

Interval training is the best way to burn fat..
Quote:
High-intensity cardio
This is most often referred to as high intensity interval training, or HIIT. Why? Because for truly high intensity, you HAVE to do it in intervals, intersparsed with light jogging or brisk walking. It's physically impossibly to keep it up for long periods of time! HIIT is favored by people who want to maintain muscle and still burn fat. Since you push your body into the anaerobic zone, you train the same type of muscle fiber trained with weights. Again, this is not a substitute for weight training but it is a good way of preserving muscle. I personally hate the treadmill for HIIT because I don't like having to mess with the buttons every couple of minutes. Instead I like the recumbant bike where I can just pedal harder for the work intervals. I'm personally not crazy about the elliptical for this because I can't really reach the anaerobic zone. If you must use it, crank up the resistance all the way. SparkPeople has a very complete page on HIIT which includes a sample training program at the end. Definitely read through it because it goes over some very important points which I don't make here. This is my favorite type of cardio to do outside of a classroom setting.

The Anywhere Workout: Men's Health
Apparently they are good for maintaing your gains if used for a short period.

Hey thanks man... that's going to come in handy. I've got to get me a set of those.
I've got to get to a gym... the closest is closed for renovations. But I did run up about a thousand stairs today... that got my heart pumping.

Sometimes I work out right before ifthar time, then I can drink something afterwards. It's not as good of a workout as during non-Ramadan times, but that's okay. I also am not as consistent during Ramadan, but I figure if i do 3x a week, at least I'm keeping up fitness.

i get so lazy after ifthaar that I don't even wanna move. Sometimes I get on the gazelle 30 minutes before ifthaar. That way, I can drink water right after...and you can recite durood while you're doing it...so it kills two birds with one stone. Insha Allah I'll do that this year as well, because I really don't want to gain weight. I gained 8 pounds since May and I want to lose it during Ramadan, but my family/friends tell me not to because they said my face was too boney 8 pounds ago and I looked sick. I like boney faces Maybe I'll lose 4 instead of 8--happy compromise

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
im incredibly bored with my workouts..so i've been doing a lot of incline work on the treadmill. it's kinda fun. run/walk/interval combos. i walk at 4.5 mph at a 9.0 incline, then run at 6.0 mph at a 7.0 incline and keep changing everything around henceforth to stay interested
im bored with weights too and my necks been getting really sore

Ooh, I have those two and a video to go along with them. I did that a few times; it was pretty cool.
I have these free weights in my room (not very heavy ones) and everytime my baby brother walks in, he picks them up and does a couple of reps (and grunts while lifting them), then puts them back down and leaves again. It always amuses me.
I'm gonna keep working out during Ramadan, InshAllah, after iftaar for a bit, but yeah... that's very close to Isha and tarawih time. My mom's been very consistent with her working out (she's lost a lot of weight) and she says she's gonna work out during the day in Ramadan, if only for half an hour. Trying to dissuade her, but she says she doesn't get dehydrated anyway.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Gosh. I haven't seen the inside of the gym in 2 weeks. I've been getting a good workout though... lifting 30 lb boxes of magnet tape... carrying butcher paper rolls all over the school... going up and down ladders to put up bulletin boards and organize space.
InshAllah once I'm in some sort of routine with work, its back to the gym!

Honestly...I think this is the most realistic expectation heading into Ramadan. Generally speaking most people will lose some muscle and pick up a bit of fat no m | |
