Re: Health and Fitness Thread
^^^^^^ that conversation is pretty funny Sally
So I've been doing a maintenance routine for the last couple of months inspite of the fact that I should have switched to a fatloss routine a few weeks ago
Now I only have 4 weeks to lose about 10-13lbs of fat.......doable but it means I have to up the ante more than I would like...
The strategy.....same weightlifting routine with added cardio.....I'll be working out twice a day (I don't recommend this to anyone unless you know how to "listen" to your body). On weightlifting days I'll do cardio as a separate session later in the day and on off days I'll do 2 cardio sessions of about 30-45 min.
Diet will be pretty strict on carbs with a higher protein and fat ratio.
For any of you who are on the fence about working out here's an article I came across that enumerates some of the benefits.
Exercise: 7 benefits of regular physical activity - MayoClinic.com

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Are you training for something in particular? I guess you'll be eating lots of egg whites and veggies, huh?

Nah sis........I'm just trying to lean out as much as possible before Ramadan insha'Allah. I did a bulking phase a while back so I'm carrying a little more fat than I'm comfortable with. Ideally I would have started much earlier but maintenance is so much simpler than fatloss......no pesky cardio to worry about, no attention to carb limitation, no neurotic record keeping lol...you get the picture.
Egg whites, lean white meats, protein shakes, tuna and veggies all the way!!! My diet will consist of mainly veggies for carbs except for a 3-4 hour post-weightlifting window where I can go a little crazier with starchy stuff (mmmmmm lasagna )

If you eat tiny meals for Sahoor and Iftar you should end up losing weight during ramadan instead of gaining any hehe

Yeah then when Ramadan is over you'll pile the weight back on. Also eating tiny meals is doing an injustice..its best to eat a large meal for Suhoor.

Only if you lack self control. Ramadan is ideal to set a new standard of eating meals with smaller helpings.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
I always try to stay in shape! I follow a strict vegetarian diet, go to the gym as much as possible, and I ride my bike wherever I can (unless it's too hot, like today)

I usually bike to work 365 if I can help it. I don't really follow a diet
Alhamdulillah biking 20 miles a day has made up for my diet imbalance

Actually its common sense. Eating fewer calories sends your body into a crazy starvation mode and slows down your metabolism. When you go back to a normal eating routine you'll pile on weight like no end because of said slow metabolism.
Why Very low calorie diets (VLCD) DO NOT work for long term weight loss
Unless people are burning mad calories biking *nudge* they'll pile on the weight.

Yea I've heard it before. But you don't have to go back to your normal eating routine. Just be more careful.

If your eating right before Ramadan you'll still put on weight, its basic science bro. YOur body is starved and your metabolism slowed. Even if you eat the recommended Calories normally you'll still put on weight after ramadan.
Unless you are doing High Intensity Cardio / Weights, the vast majority of Nutritionists and fitness experts agree on it.

Yeah.....I hear what you're saying bro, theoretically it's possible to lose weight during Ramadan but exactly as Revert says most people will regain quite a bit of weight (and then some) shortly after. More importantly, I'm not really trying to "lose weight" per say, I'm specifically looking to cut fat for body composition purposes. Right now I'm about 189lbs at roughly 15% body fat....I'm hoping to get to just under 10% over the next month iA.
