Re: Health and Fitness Thread
^^I have motivation today, in the form of my sister. She won't leave me alone unless we go to the gym...not sure if that's altogether good since I need to have a 2-hour exam turned in before midnight (started by 9:00pm latest) and it's already after 6. We're leaving as soon as my workout clothes are done in the dryer
In other random news I saw a smashed, dried, dead iguana-type creature on the sidewalk, it was

I think its 3/4 of your maximum heartrate. I go by how much i'm out of breath and use that to judge how hard i'm working.

Think of a goal you want to achieve and stick to. I think of my wife and family and how i'll be able to stay around a bit longer (insha'Allah) I also think of the reward in looking after the gift Allah(swt) has offorded me in the form of a fully functional body. Some people can't walk, or move their bodies..i bet they wish they could be active.
In other words i guilt trip myself into working out. I also like the feeling of working out and watching the fat slowly go away.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Jazakallah khair for the advice.
I used to be quite regular, especially when I was working out at the gym, and I was eating pretty healthy. But now I work out at home usually, and I have a hard time being regular, especially when things come up and I get busy. :$
But insha'allah khair, after this week is over, or probably this week maybe I'll try working out regularly.
And I like the feeling after you work-out too, it is very satisfying.

I see your point, its always good to have a workout buddy..that helps a lot. I find if i walk with my wife and stuff I am more inclined to stick to it.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
I'm a officially now one of the dumb people everyone laughs at at the gym. I cover up the display on the treadmill, because if I see how much time I have left, I lose motivation to keep going. So I covered it up today with my towel. Um, yeah, I need that towel to wipe the sweat out of my eyes. But if I pick it up, I see the time and all is lost. So I closed my eyes, picked up the towel and wiped off. I tried to put the towel back with my eyes closed, missed, dropped it, and then almost fell off the treadmill. Really graceful.
I did run 25 minutes today, which was pretty darn good considering I haven't run in months.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Yoga is a tough one, especially for muslims. A lot of yoga classes have hindu overtones or blatent hindu ideas taught along with the movements.
Looks for something along the lines of "fitness yoga." I take that and it's just move from position to position, watch your breathing, nothing religious about it at all. My mom tried a yoga studio awhile back, and it was pretty hindu oriented. I take my class at a gym. I have this dvd that is pretty decent:
Amazon.com: Sara Ivanhoe's 20 Min Yoga Makeover - Weight Loss: Sara Ivanhoe, Andrea Ambandos: Movies & TV
My instructors always say never force yourself into a position. Do it a little more each time, and gradually you'll be able to get into them.

Basically. Just wanted to add that you wanna worry about your heartrate while you're exercising....not so much afterwards.
Here's some info....you may find that you need to go a bit above or a bit below the advised heartrate range....experiment with it
What should your target heart rate be during exercise? During exercise, you need to train at a pace and intensity where your heart rate increases, but not exceeds, 70% - 75% of your theoretical maximum heart rate (TMHR).
How do you calculate your MHR?
Your MHR = 70 % x (225 minus your age).
A 35-year-old’s MHR will be:
70/100 x (225 – 35)
= 70/100 x 190
= 133 – 142 (75 % will be 142)
How would you measure your heart rate?
Easy! Feel your pulse for 10 seconds. It’s easiest to feel it with two fingers in your neck – follow the arch of the trachea from the midline of your throat to either the left or right side of your neck. You’ll feel the beating pulse right where the arch of the trachea curves into the hollow “valley”. You should count 1/6th of your TMHR. For most people this will be approximately 17 –25 beats per 10 seconds.
Here's a table to your MHR according to age.
During exercise, your heart rate will increase. But this should happen within certain limits. Use the tables below to check whether your heart is overworking during exercise:
Target heart rate during exercise Age (years) Minimum - maximum heart rate (bpm) 15 123 - 164 20 120 - 160 25 117 - 156 30 114 - 152 35 111 - 148 40 108 - 144 45 105 - 140 50 102 - 136 55 99 - 132 60 96 - 128 65 93 - 124 70 90 - 120 75 87 - 116

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
My target heart rate according to that formula is 142.8....when I'm on the elliptical it usually goes up to 150 - 160. My doctor told me though that those heart rate things on the machines usually are not accurate. eh..
anyway I'm glad my sister forced me to go to the gym. I just printed out my reading assignment and passed the time that way on the elliptical . I spent 30 minutes doing cardio then 25 doing light weights/crunches and planks etc. She told me I actually look thinner than when she saw me 1 week ago.. alhamdulillah

Then there's the New York lawsuit involving a screaming spin class participant who was forcibly upended on his stationary bike by a classmate fed up with his loud grunts and shouts of "You go, girl!" In June, jurors acquitted the defendant, stockbroker Christopher Carter, of assault charges in that incident.

So why don't Arab women feel this need to exercise, what is holding them back? Is it their religious or cultural beliefs? Or maybe it is a lack of motivation?
|
Quote:
Dr. Laila Al-Marayati, an American of Palestinian descent, explained the role of cultural traditions on making women less inclined to working out.
"I think that culture and religion have an impact on whether or not women exercise in public. But I don't think they impose any barriers or could provide any excuses for not exercising in private," said the spokesperson and past president of the Muslim Women's League (MWL), a Los Angeles-based organization.
"One factor that would explain why Arab women don't exercise as much may be that athletics and sports in general are not emphasized in society, especially for women. Therefore, they may be more inclined to see exercise and sports as male-oriented activities."
|
I often worry about how I'll exercise if/when we move to the ME. I think I'll have to make it a condition that I'll be near a health club and that the husband will get up and go running at 4 am with me before it gets bloody hot.
