Checked it out... it's pretty cool. That's a great site, thanks for the suggestion. The only thing I'm worried about is the time factor... cardio is an important part of my work out, but if I were to follow that, cardio would be my workout - I just wouldn't have time for other things. So I think I'm going to take pointers from the print-out, and engineer what I can of it into my schedule. I'm going to plan for at least one long run a week.

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Weee, I was only 2 minutes late to my class last night And we had a sub instructor who was all hardcore. The step portion was more complicated than usual, which I loooove, and the weights portion was good. I pushed it a bit and did 3 pounds over my normal bicep and weights for half the time. I can push 15 pounds when I'm just doing 12 reps, 2 sets on my own (to build muscles), but in these classes they do 20 reps, 5 or 6 sets (to keep muscles lean), so I usually do 5 pounds. I used the 8 pound weights this time until my muscles fatigued
My goal is that by this time next year, I'll be pushing the heaviest weights (12 pounds) throughout the class, the heaviest bar (30 pounds), and have to bring in heavier weights off the rack.
American Gladiator was on Family Feud last night, and I had a brief fantasy about being as ripped as the female gladiators
On a (quasi) related note - I'm so dang pale Since my gym is women only, I wear tank tops, but I'm ashamed of my pasty arms. It's been drilled into me that tanning is BAD, but I'm seriously considering it. Would tanning be bad for a hijabi who doesn't get any sun? I'm not looking for a dark tan, just a teeny tiny bit of color so I'm not so shockingly white compared to everyone else.

My gym just started a kickboxing class using weighted gloves. They have a discount coupon if people want to buy the gloves from some place online I think. inshaAllah I"ll see if it's still available and pm it to ya.

Rahma: I'm super pale too, my legs are a serious problem...I bet they even glow in the dark!
You can get these gradual self-tanners from lots of different brands.. Jergens (used that, didn't like it), Avon, Olay, Bath&Body Works etc etc. Just remember to exfoliate every day when you use it or it will become blotchy and leave orange spots on your skin (I found out the hard way ). If you find the right kind and keep up with it (exfoliate, use the lotion once a day after showering) you should have a nice subtle tan in a week or so

You should get a tan in your backyard or some place where nobody is... you need your D. 15 minutes of sun/day should do it if your really pale.

Sadly not everyone has a backyard or enough privacy if they do have one . Rahma, if you can do this then you're lucky mA and don't forget sunblock!

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Well, I'm not certain but I think those tanning lotions only cause a melanin reaction, they don't do anything for you health-wise. So at least make sure you're taking a supplement if you aren't getting any sun.

What if you're fully hijab-ed but still spend about an hour or more per day in the sun. Does that still count?

Hmm... that sounds like a question for the "Ask a Doctor" thread. My source on this is Oprah.
(or at least some doctor dude who was on oprah)

Re: Health and Fitness Thread
Yeah, I was wondering if the tanning bed gives you any benefits of sun. We do have a balcony, and I was trying to figure out how I could close it off so that only a body size hole in the top is open to let the sun in. Then I could lay out for awhile This sounds like a project for this weekend.

Our family physician told my sister she can go to tanning beds but ONLY for 6 weeks out of the whole year otherwise the health benefits turn into health hazards. This recommendation is usually for people who are prone to slight depression in lack of sunlight/summer months but I think it's okay for "regular" people too..."just dont do more than six weeks and never get burnt" is what she said.
Good luck with that weekend project
