Use a shaving gel/foam that is specifically for sensitive skin. I sometimes get quite a sore neck when I shave aswell, and find that Gillette Gel for Sensitive Skin works well for me.
Another thing I've found, is that using oil to shave instead of foam or gel often results in a much smoother shave. The only downside is that it will probably clog up your razor.
Also, similar to what Bud said, it's best to shave after having taken a shower. If you are not able to, or don't need to take a shower, then wash your face with hot water. Another useful tip is to get a face flannel, soak it in really hot water and then just rest it on your face and neck for a few minutes before shaving. All of these methods are done in order to heat the face so that your pores open. When the pores are opened, the hair follicles are much easier to cut.

Ditto. Do it after a hot shower.
If you can't, then soak a small cloth towel in hot water and hold it up to your face for a minute or two. I also leave a small stream of completely hot water running while I have the cloth to my face, and I have the razor sitting, blades up in the hot water.
use a barber's brush if you want when applying shaving cream, that also helps.

Re: Mens Personal Hygiene
mang i remember deepreal had posted this really awesome site about how to shave right.
its gone since the crash.
i've shaved my face for a long time and used to keep a half goatee but for about six months now i've let my facial hair grow but kept trimming it to a number 2 on my trimmer.
i want it to get darker but within that time its only managed to get a little darker only near my sideburns. the cheek area just wont get any darker.
any suggestions?

My hair (not facial hair) got really dark when I cut it short and went in sun. Every two weeks, I would basically shave my head, and I worked at a grocery store as a bagger, so I would go outside and get carts. I would be outside for like 2-3 hours a day in the sun, and my hair went from brown to black. Heck, my parents thought I dyed my hair.
I'm thinking if you constantly cut beard short and go in sun frequently, it could make beard darker. I'm not entirely sure, but that's me theory.

Bro that wont work on facial hair. I'm suprised it worked on your natural hair..the sun usually bleaches hair lighter not darker. It was probably a natural change in hair colour (happened to me at 12) but because you shaved your ahd it didn't come in gradually..
RESAY: its all genetics bro..if bushy dark hair is the dominat gene than you ahve a good chance of getting good beard hair.

Why does the Koran promise virgins to martyrs? Are they different to the ones we get here? Because they're no fun on earth.

you've just got to let it grow for a while and use a higher trimmer setting. it took me a while, but the cheeks eventually "filled in." then you can go back to whatever lower setting you were accustomed to for the main jaw/chin area. or you could be adventurous and trim the beard at different settings for different settings. results not guaranteed
in terms of shaving, definitely got to have the skin moisturized or it's going to be painful as others have mentioned, after the shower works and to add, using a sharp razor is best. I tend to get nicked with the cheap single blades, so Mach III it is.
how do you make the beard softer? i've tried the olive oil solution, but it's messy and somewhat impractical. usually I just use conditioner and that helps without leaving an oily residue. i'm trying to make mine so soft that it's a portable pillow

The growth you experienced is the natural growth of the hair and has nothing to do with the amount you trim or shave. It takes time for some people to grow facial hair in certain areas, and it also depends on your genetics.
Also for shaving..i watched the vids linked and went to the sites...you need a good shaving creme/soap..not the crap sold at pharmacies and supermarkets as the areosols use d in the pumps sappes the moisture form the cram/gel/foam and they add artificall moisturisers and anti septiuces..which does nothing to soften the bristles...trust me watch the vid linked here..
i tried the techniques using cheap gillete foam and i managed to do okay..im waiting to get a brush and good foam and see if theres a difference.
IM totally gonna gruate to a straight razor..haha like Sweeny todd!

I agree, and wasn't really implying such. in my experience, though, trimmers tend to cut closer on flatter areas (cheek) than they do on curved areas (jawline), so one std. setting for the whole beard trims some areas shorter than others, so they don't really have time to grow. if you're willing to let the main (jawline) part of your beard get a little bit longer by using a higher setting, it won't trim other areas of your beard (e.g.) so short and will give a fuller appearance. or like I mentioned, experiment with different settings for different areas.........with caution.

OH okay lol
I wouldn't know as the hair doesnt really grow in my cheeks..i pretty much shave everything but the chin. I grew it all out once but it didn't really look too good apart from the chin and jaw area...
