I hate it when cheesecake makers put gelatin in their cheesecakes (I'm looking at you, Sara Lee). Most homemade recipes never call for it. I think it has to do with stabilizing it. I'm a dork and I watch desi cooking shows on satellite and for some reason, almost every recipe of theirs contains gelatin (but they're quick to announce that "it's halal.") At least Philly cream cheese recipes don't call for gelatin.

Anyways, I guess there are still some options left for those of us who love Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes.

Regarding cheese and its permissibility, the following passage is probably the most detailed one you will find online in recent times. It deals with the subject of cheese from animal and non-animal sources, as well as from zabiha and non-zabiha sources

I strongly suggest everyone to read it.

I think the issue is gelatin, not cheese. Do you have any articles about gelatin?

My post above was implicitly referring to thejellymill's post about Kraft macaroni and cheese.

However if you read the entire article, you'll see it can apply to gelatin as well, so its very relevant to the issue regarding Cheesecake Factory.

So you take the opinion that since gelatin, while derived from animal bones a) undergoes a complete animal transformation from the initial animal ligaments and bones to the final gelatin product and b) is used in very small amounts, that it's okay? I'll buy that. I believe many Jews also follow the same reasoning, which is why even gelatin labeled as Koesher my actually come from pig sources. Here's a fatwa on the issue:

Quote:
If the gelatine is derived from any part of an animal which can be consumed according to Shariah, e.g. cow, camel, sheep, goat, etc. and slaughtered according to Shariah, it will be permissible. If the
animal cannot be consumed according to Shariah, or was not slaughtered according to Shariah, the gelatine from such an animal will not be permissible. However, if it undergoes a complete change of metamorphosis (Tabdeel-e-Maahiyyat), the gelatine will be permissible. i.e. if metamorphosis takes place in pork gelatine or gelatine derived from an animal not slaughtered according to Shariah, it will be Halaal.

If it does not undergo a complete change, it is not permissible to use it or sell it. The income will be Haraam. However, in a state of Idhtiraar (desperation), one will be excused to use it if there is no alternative and prescribed by a Physician. The state of desperation must be confirmed by a reliable Mufti.

And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Mufti Ebrahim Desai

To be specific, if the animal ingredients have had any of the following:

a) Have undergone complete chemical transformation
b) Are in such small and insignificant portions that the final product has no characteristics or effects

then yes, I will eat it.

Oh and with all due respect to Mufti Ebrahim Desai ... the other verdict was far more elaborate and thorough, and completely contradicts what he said. I usually dont take from Mufti Ebrahim Desai simply because I've found many instances where his fataawa are either too short on an issue, or too shallow.

Arghh.. we really need to find the person who keeps asking questions no one wants answers to. My diet is limited as it is. Someone told me the other day that Taco Bell's sour cream has animal sources in it... chalupas will never be the same again.

From the wording of the fatwa, you can pretty much tell that he really doesn't know how gelatin is made.
