Low Carb/Starch Diet: tips & recipies & stuff
Assalamualaykum,
So some* girls in fph mentioned it really works, so I thought maybe I’d try it out. But what do people eat on low carb/starch diets???
My life revolves around carbs/starchy foods so I have NO idea. Even when I used to be on a low calorie diet before, my breakfast would be ricecakes, snacks would be water-crackers etc, there's like a mainly-carb food in everything I eat.
I was thinking about making a list of what I could eat yesterday, but instead the thought of not eating carbs led me to eat 6 carb filled meals .
So yea I need help . Use this thread to share tips, ideas and recipies!
I bet everything I mention will end up having a lot of carbs that I dont know about.
Breakfast: yoghurt and fruit?
Parsnip chips (maybe grilled?)
Stuffed Peppers (what do you stuff em with?)
Does corn stuff have a lot of carb? What about cous cous?
*2
ps. I wrote this while eating my second serving of biryani. :foodlove:

Re: Low Carb/No Carb Diet: tips & recipies & stuff
real now/low carb diets eliminate foods like fruits, vegetables. I did one once 4 years ago. I ended up eating cheese and eggs and meat for 5 days.
what the girls in fph were talking about is reducing the starchy foods like bread and pasta.

Re: Low Carb/No Carb Diet: tips & recipies & stuff
Okay Im changing the title to low starch diet
But even then, I'd have trouble, every meal I have has either bread/rice/cereal/pasta/potato as the main part of the meal, so I still need help .

Re: Low Carb/Starch Diet: tips & recipies & stuff
you just replace all rice/potatoes/bread/pasta with salad or some kind of vegetable.

Re: Low Carb/Starch Diet: tips & recipies & stuff
if you do low carb, go a few days on and a few days off (high carb/low fats on those days) so your thyroid keeps doing its thing
you're better off eating lean meats/fish, vegetables, fruits, 'good fats' (sesamin, olive oil, etc) and just avoiding grains as much as possible

Food Standards Agency - Eat well, be well - Starchy foods
How much do I need?
Starchy foods should make up about a third of the food we eat. Most people should be eating more starchy foods. So if you want to eat healthily try to think about the proportions of the different foods you eat in a day.
Starchy foods are a good source of energy and the main source of a range of nutrients in our diet. As well as starch, these foods contain fibre, calcium, iron and B vitamins.
Some people think starchy foods are fattening, but they contain less than half the calories of fat. You just need to watch out for the added fats used for cooking and serving, because this is what increases the calorie content. If you're concerned about your weight, wholegrain varieties are an especially good choice.
Low-carbohydrate diets
'Low-carbohydrate' diets have had a lot of publicity recently. These diets usually involve cutting out most starchy foods.
Cutting out starchy foods, or any food group, can be bad for your health because you could be missing out on a range of nutrients. Low-carbohydrate diets tend to be high in fat, and eating a diet that is high in fat (especially saturated fat from foods such as meat, cheese, butter and cakes) could increase your chances of developing coronary heart disease.
These diets may also restrict the amount of fruit, veg and fibre you eat, all of which are vital for good health.
So, rather than avoiding starchy foods, it's better to try and base your meals on them, so they make up about a third of your diet.

Did I just kill my own thread?
Oki let me clarify:
If I wanted to cut out starchy foods such as bread/rice/cereal/pasta/potato (those are starchy foods right? Correct me if I'm being dumb)...THEN what other things could I eat instead that are not totally fatty-licious?

Yea I guess, but replacing rice with just salad sounds kind of really, not -filling lol. I need like a bread substitute or something .

it's filling if you eat enough of it. plus you can add chickpeas to make it more substantial.
spaghetti squash is a good replacement for pasta.

Sha, eat what you like, when you like. I do it, and I'm only 5 stone overweight. Works for me, and it can work for you too.

chick peas are pretty starchy, except i been eating some every now and then
put grilled chicken on top of your salad and drink a bottle of water with it. itll fill you up if theres enough of it. and dont use too much dressing either, thats a biggg part. if you do use oil+garlic+vinegar type of dressing or balsamic or LIGHT italian, nothing creamy because thats really fatty.
for breakfast i usually have a protein shake or something, or i boil eggs. or make an omellette with minimal olive oil. i like eggs+asparagus+mushrooms+red pepper. its delicious. and eat it with a fork. its feeling if you eat enough, plus a bottle of water.
yesterday i ate salad and shish kabobs. dipped them in hummus (even though i wasnt supposed to). and drnak lots of water.
aaannd the other day i went to the keg and i got yummy creole chicken, its grilled, with tomatoees and shrimp and scallops on top. with a salad on the side. and water. lol.
anyway yeah, its not THAT hard to cut out carbs. my diet also includes cutting out salt so thats the hardest part for me. and if youre eating an insane amount of protein liek i am make sure youre working out as well.
ohh and for snacks, i bought these little tuna things from the store. theres different flavours, the other day i had spicy thai it was yummy. so thats a good thing to sanck on if you like to snack. and i cut up fresh mushrooms and cucumbers and cherry tomatoes to snack on too.
basically, life sucks. so if youre skinny already screw this diet. lol

But I've been doing that all this time and I still cant get down to just 5 stone overweight!

But the stuff you described sounds yum . But then again I'm not planning on cutting out salt. Cept it'll still be fairly hard for me considering I'm used to every single meal being based on a starchy food. Shame about the chickpeas, I love em . The omlette sounds yum.
So what exactly are these 'little tuna things' ?
Ps. lool I'm not skinny!
Displaced, Ive never heard of spaghetti squash before but:
it looks interesting lol. So the vegetable is already spaghetti-like inside ?
Zakk, Atkins is quite extreme though isn't it, you cant eat fruit and stuff?
Ps. did it work though?

Re: Low Carb/Starch Diet: tips & recipies & stuff
You don't have to totally eliminate carbs from your diet either... just make sure that a far greater portion is coming from veggies and fruits.
If you keep half your plate full of veggies, then the remaining quarter should be complex carbs, and the other quarter protein (chicken breast or something).
That's a real loose rule of thumb, but it's seemed to work for me, and I'm really prone to taking carb dives.
