Let's Go People! Ready. Set. Hope.
AsSalamu' Alaykum,
Oki ladies and gents, whose down with me for the 2day Avon Walk for Breast Cancer?
I'm hoping to gather a team for the walk in New York on Oct. 4-5th 2008. But feel free to make up teams according to which city walk is closest to you. It'd be cool if we could come up with just one big ass team, and team name, but grouped by states.
 if you're down to walking.
if you're not only down with walking but also down with being a group leader, i.e. forming your area group.
This is Shadha and I'm for the New York Walk.
Here's some quick FAQ, but make sure you check out the link for more details:
What is the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer?
The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is a series of weekend fundraising events launched in 2003. The 2008 Walks will take place in nine cities from April through October, as follows:
Houston April 12 - 13
Washington, D.C. May 3 - 4
Boston May 17 - 18
Chicago May 31 - June 1
Rocky Mountains June 28 - 29
San Francisco July 12 - 13
Los Angeles September 13 - 14
New York October 4 - 5
Charlotte October 25 - 26
Are the Avon Walks women-only events?
Absolutely not! Men are both welcome and encouraged to participate. Breast cancer touches everyone - families, parents, brothers, sisters, and children. The disease even strikes a small percentage of men. Everyone can do their part in the fight against it.
Can I form a team for the Walk?
Yes you can and we hope you will! Forming a team is a great way to train and fundraise. You can form your own team or check to see if there is an existing team you can join. Read about our Team Program on the website and in your Participant Handbook or call your local event office. Please note that every team member must reach the individual fundraising minimum of at least $1,800, but doing it as part of a team makes fundraising and training easier and more fun!
What is the minimum age requirement? Can my kids walk with me?
The minimum age for participation in the Avon Walk is 16. Insurance costs prohibit us from welcoming anyone under that age, even if they are accompanied by their parents. There are, however, some volunteer opportunities for teenagers; you can find out about these through your local event office.
Can you help me with training and fundraising?
Yes, we can! Once your register, you'll have access to a comprehensive support system. You'll be assigned to a Walker Buddy -a staff member who can help you with just about anything you need. We have a training program to help you to begin walking short distances and increase your mileage over time, plus volunteer-led Training Walks to train with other Walkers. Our experienced staff will also help to turn you into a fundraising expert, and you’ll receive a participant handbook and other materials with plenty of great ideas. Plus, through our online message board, Introduction Meetings, Connection Events and Training Walks, Walkers share ideas and provide incredible support for each other.
How far will I have to walk?
The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer offers a choice of a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over a weekend. The total distance is up to you. Your goal is to walk at least the distance of a marathon (26.2 miles) over the two days. You can also choose to walk a full marathon on Saturday and another half-marathon (13.1 miles) on Sunday. It’s your choice and you can make up your mind (and change it) right on the spot.
What if I can't walk that far?
In the event that you need a little help, the route will always be patrolled by vehicles to provide assistance when needed.

Waliykum as'salam.
What a coincidence, I was just talking to sally yesterday about doing something like this. I'm not 100% sure yet, but I'd love the join the walk in NY. Insh'Allah khair, I'm gonna read up on this some more and then make a final decision.

Re: Let's Go People! Ready. Set. Hope.
I was reading about Team Creation and Requirements and thought this would be really cool for us:
Team Tenting: Team Tenting gives teams of 10 or more people the opportunity to be assigned to tents grouped together in the Wellness Village. This means that you and your team can have your tents all in a row your very own “team neighborhood!”
I'd feel a bit safer sleeping around those I 'know'.

Re: Let's Go People! Ready. Set. Hope.
Yay!
Are you going to start training, like, tomorrow?
MashaAllah I still have a couple months before mine, but starting tomorrow, I'm going to start training.
I'm actually really excited about this. Usually anything involving long walking periods, I'm like, "Oh screw that! Where my car keys at?" But with this, I'm siked. I wanted to do one last year, but I got married, I wanted to do one the year before, but I was too young for my parents to let me. So now this year, I'm ready to roll.
I asked the hubster if he would do it with me. He didn't exactly say yes but he didn't frown upon it either. He said he's not sure if he'll be able to get that weekend off since InshaAllah he'll still be new on the job, but that he might train with me during the summer months...yayy!!!

Gee, I dunno, I think it'd be kind of a long walk for me.

Re: Let's Go People! Ready. Set. Hope.
Shotgun, if your area [I'm guessing you'd fall under Washington] were further away in the year, then yeah you can do it. But you folks have your date coming right around the corner...hell I wouldn't do it either.

What does the date have to do with it?
